I stayed at this hotel with my boyfriend and two friends (one room for me and my boyfriend, another for my friends) and we arrived after a long journey at 10.30pm expecting to have someone on the desk ready to check us in as we were assured that check in was until midnight. However, when we got there the place was completely dark with the doors to the reception locked! We moved around the buildings, trying to guess where a member of staff might be when we found a notice with our names on saying which lodge we were allocated. (Great, so how do we find these lodges in the pitch black?) We walked around some more and managed to see someone locking a door with a couple of sets of keys in his hands, we simply said who we were and he handed over the keys, didn't want to see our booking confirmation or anything, just took our word for it. When asked where the lodges were he pointed towards the other buildings and simply said "over there" and got into a waiting car...
After noticing that were not being escorted to our rooms we hoped that everything would be okay because it was obvious that if there were any issues there was no one on site to sort them out for us. My room was okay, save for the cobwebs, spiders and shower that smelled of urine - I could live with that once my boyfriend removed the spiders. My friend's room on the other hand was disgusting! It STANK of damp, the heating wasn't working so it was freezing, and of course there were cobwebs. They rang the night emergency number that was printed on the door (on their mobile because the landline phone in the room wasn't working for either of us) and spoke to possibly the same man who had just left for the night. When they told him of their situation he immediately hung up on them and turned the phone off so that they couldn't ring again. They left a message which was never responded to even two days later when we came to checking out. I feel that by itself was completely inadequate, I know its a 2* but that was ridiculous... Anyway my friends just had to put up with the smell for the night or face sleeping in the car, there was no other option at 11pm.
In the morning my partner had to be up early because he was best man at a wedding (thankfully not being held at this hotel) and was needed to help set up at 8am, so we had to have our breakfast at 7.30am, which we were told was the start both at booking and on laminated sheets in the rooms. We got to the main building and everything was still locked up, our names were still on the door from last night, no one around. I was getting pretty fed up at this point so we went back to our room at came back to the building 15 minutes later. Everything was still locked up so I planned on waiting there for someone, ANYONE, to show up - which they did eventually. Two women who after being approached by my exasperated boyfriend asking if this is where we were to be served breakfast, laughed and said yes they both just had car trouble (came in seperate cars). I couldn't believe how rude they were being and this sort of set the tone for the whole place in my eyes because if three different members of staff were being like this then there could be no excuse.
Facilities... The fitness room was never open so we couldn't try that out. The swimming pool would have been nice if the lights had been turned on, the window had been cleaned of bright green mold and the swimming pool itself had been cleaned of grit that had piled up around the edges.
I think its fair to say I would not recommend this hotel, I am not normally quick to criticise hotels but this one was such a disappointment I had to write a review on it and I hope that others will chose to pay a couple of ££ more on a nicer, cleaner hotel.
