“"An ideal location for an Exmoor weekend"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2009

We enjoyed 2 nights at this bed and breakfast accommodation. Our room was booked on the internet and we opted for the cheaper room (about £70 per night). The room itself was clean and comfortable but we would suggest one or two extra facilities such as a wall mirror (there wasn't one in the room) , arm-chairs to relax in and maybe some pictures. We feel these additions would enhance the room. The bathroom which was the other side of the corridor was luxurious with lovely fittings and toiletries. On a future visit, we would probably opt for one of the other bedrooms if available as they were tastefully furnished with ensuites. The breakfast was very enjoyable . The hosts Rachel and Dan made us very welcome and nothing seemed too much trouble. The location was ideal for touring Exmoor and we enjoyed the peace and quiet of this tranquil part of the country.

“Couldn't have done more - perfect peace and quiet!”

I booked a stay at Higher Riscombe after looking for a luxury B&B roughly on the way from Cornwall to Bristol and was really impressed with the look of the place and the way it was advertised on its excellent website. We are both relatively young and like modern, contemporary decor and this looked exactly that!

We booked the Beacon Dunkery room which overlooked the back garden for £80. After getting lost (our fault!!) we finally found the place and found our way down the rather pot holed driveway! First impressions was that it really is in the middle of nowhere! No reception on our mobiles was perfect though. Rachel (who had been very helpful prior to booking) welcommed us.

Our room was very tasteful indeed, and the bathroom was MASSIVE. After a freshen up, Rachel sorted us out a lift to the local Royal Oak in Withypool which was fantastic. The epitome of a local pub, with gorgeous food and great service. If we didn't feel we were in the Countryside already, we did after that! The very friendly barmaid even gave us a lift back to the B&B after our meal - awesome!

We enjoyed an amazing nights sleep in the massive bed, before some more brilliant food - a cooked breakfast! Sadly, we didn't even have time to explore the countryside as we had to get going and that was a huge regret as it is a truly beautiful area.

Nevertheless, awesome B&B that definately lives up to its luxurious tag. Perfect to get away from anything, and I bet the Royal Oak would be mighty cosy in the winter in front of the log fire.

Next time we stay we will definately stay for longer and explore more, especially the pubs nearer to the B&B which seemed perfect distance for a drink motivated work.

“Luxury B & B it definitely is!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2009

Stayed for just 1 night, shame it couldn't have been longer! Room was lovely, very high spec, best towels we've ever had in a B&B and we've stayed in quite a few!

Lovely breakfast (inc fresh strawberries!) and beautiful setting. Would highly recommend this one. Rachel said that they had only been running it as a B&B since last July, she's doing a really good job.

“Wonderful place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2009

Rachel and Dan provide a great welcome. The rooms are finished to a high spec. Our Redstone room had an enormous bed with mattress toppers and good quality bedsheets. However being one of the first guests, it seemed it wasn't quite ready yet. The TV was boxed in the wardrobe and no DVD player. The huge bathroom was stunning though, with natural stone tiling, jacuzzi and double shower. Loved the Dr Hauschka and Avalon bath products too.

Breakfast was great and Rachel arranged a lovely picnic hamper upon request, however the recommended pub was expensive for OK food. She also gave me a discount for booking direct.

Our stay was great. I expect that now it is up and running and bedded in, it must be perfect. Our only comment was that the farmhouse is very quiet, so we didn't feel that we could make much noise. This will probably be fine once they get a higher traffic of guests!

Being in the middle of Exmoor had its pros and cons. The location is perfect for a getaway, but it's some way to the nearest towns. A great base for getting to Lynton/Lynmouth etc. I'd recommend it for a romantic break, active break or girly getaway.

“Perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 March 2009

My partner and I went to Higher Riscombe Farm B&B on a Sunday evening and I lost all simple ability to read maps and we turned up about 2 hours later than planned. Inspite of this, Rachel and Dan (The B&B owners) had endless patience to direct us from our roundabout journey to the hotel (5 phone calls later:-)).
The room was absolutely beautiful and then we were made so welcome - it was a lovely end to a long journey from Stevenage....the other reviews were absolutely spot on - if not understated - the bed is enormous and incredibly comfortable and the bathrooms are all the luxury as described.
We awoke to a lovely farm setting and enjoyed a fantastic breakfast that Rachel cooked to perfection.
The location is remote enough to feel like an escape but there are numerous choices of day trips within minutes of the B&B to villages, resteraunts, pubs, cycle rides, walks and beaches all around.
Dan was kind enough to not only drop us off and pick us up from a local pub (where the food was superb and people incredibly welcoming), but also take the time to give us a tour of their farm and Rachel left us a breakfast when we decidided to have a lazy day in the hotel and wake up late morning. We met the famous Tetley and he was still friendly depsite his marathon 130KM run that day!!
I travel to hotels and B&Bs all over the UK and Europe and can't speak highly enough of the establishment and the care taken to make your stay special. I will be recommending this to all my friends and colleagues.
All in all this was exactly what we were looking for and we can't wait to make our next booking in the summer.
Thank you both for a wonderful break and good luck in all your ongoing ventures.
