“Don't even think of staying here .........”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2009

Booked to stay here to break a long journey. Empty car park should have been a warning. Booked cottage for three nights. BIG mistake. Cold, damp, grubby, tatty, ripped cover on armchair, car park area outside cottage was full of builders materials, disappointing meal. Forfeited booking and moved out that evening as couldn't face even one night.

“Great scenery, good food, fair room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2007

A real, genuinely old Inn, with great scenery.
Room
Stayed in Abbotts room, which is spacious but the tiny ensuite shower room needs total refurbishment. Mouldy, cracked tiles & dirty, cheap 1980's fittings are a real let down to an otherwise pleasant room.

Food
The quality of our dinner was above average, with good flavour & presentation, the dining room has a lot of character.
Breakfast was interesting. No real choice about what you get, but it's tasty and there's enough of it.

Staff
Pub staff, so as usual in England they are poorly paid and don't go out of their way for you. Indifferent.

“Not good enough”

For good pub food...avoid! The George simply doesn't come up to scratch. I have been three times in the last couple of years in the hope that it may have got its act together. Sadly, this is not the case. Whilst the 700 year old grade 1 listed building certainly looks the part, the tired Sunday lunch menu - offered on photocopied scraps of paper...oh come on!! - offers little in the way of even a hint of culinary diversity; the standard Sunday roast was likened to "school dinner fare" by one member of my party; the cheeses on the 'platter' looked and tasted like they had been out of the fridge too long; Staff were ridiculously slow to clear tables and looked pretty disinterested and scruffy...I could go on. Have a quick drink, enjoy the surroundings but don't have lunch, there are too many good places around the area to waste your money here. Get your act together George!

“Great place - highly recommend!”

We just returned from a trip to England and spent 2 nights at The George Inn. We stayed in 6 hotels/B&B's while in Europe and this was, by far, our favorite! The ambience of this Inn was wonderful. We felt like we were stepping back in time when we walked in. The innkeeper, Jack, was very hospitable and enjoyed talking all about the history of the inn. We ate dinner there one night and it was fabulous. The breakfast was also great. The pub in the Inn as well as the one across the street are also well worth visiting. The back view is beautiful. Would definitely stay here again! Great place!

“Fabulous Food”

We rented a cottage in Norton St. Philip, so of course we had to check out the 2 local pubs. The George Inn was a true gem. Not only does it offer accommodations, but the food was exquisite and the local clientelle were delightful. We enjoyed it so much that we had dinner here on 3 evenings. One evening we ate just appetizers and wine. The appetizers ranged from a brie wrapped in filo dough and served with a piquant fruit sauce to tiger prawns lightly battered and serverd with a zesty dipping sauce. The main entrees were equally wonderful, as were the desserts--including an classical "Spotted Dick." If you want to know what it is, you'll just have to visit.
