“Overpriced and a bit disorganised”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2011

We stayed here with another couple on a two day package to celebrate the new year. In spite of the special offer price it was still extremely expensive and we expected great things.

Our room, "Kestral" was quite large but we were disappointed to find it had no shower - only a bath. The TV, as previously stated by others, looked as though it had come out of the ark and was placed on a small table at the foot of the bed which made it impossible to view when in the bed. There were also no tea/coffee making facilities, which is unusual for an English hotel. After one night however, there was a malfunction in the boiler serving our room and we were moved into a junior suite instead. This was much plusher and did have the longed for shower but strangely was actually smaller than our original room. Considering the extra price one would normally have to pay I would advise people not to bother but book a luxury room instead (do ask for one with a shower though!)

The food was excellent, as was expected and the service in the restaurant was very good. Drinks were very overpriced though, the cheapest bottle of wine was £22. It was when we came to leave and pay our bill that the disorganisation became apparent. We were billed for several bottles of wine which we had not had, as well as bottled water and drinks from the bar. It was eventually sorted out but on our return home after checking our bank statement we realised that we had been charged twice for our room!
After ringing the hotel to tell them they informed us that they had charged us for the room our friends had stayed in as well. This was a bit of a cheek as they had not been told to do so and, had our friends been less honest, could have left us out of pocket.

All in all we had an enjoyable two days but I wouldn't go back again. For the price we paid I would expect a better standard of service and amenities.

“Very happy customers...all 26 of us!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2011

Having heard the reputation of great food at Hunstrete House, I decided to organise a christmas meal for 26 people in the restaurant.

We were a group with several food allergies and food preferences, ranging from peanut allergy, gluten allergy, vegans, no sponge puddings- so I was slightly hesitant to book something up. However, Shelia did not seemed fazed by all of our requests and organised our group brilliantly, reassuring us that everything was no problem.

The price that was given to us was considerably cheaper than others that I had been quoted of places in central Bath.

Upon arrival at Hunstrete, we were taken into the library where compliments were flying everywhere about the beauty of the manor house. We were greeted warmly by two men- I assume one was the manager and another a waitor. We were taken into the Garden room which was decorated beautifully for us!

The food was amazing! I don't remember being any negative comments about the food besides a couple not being keen on the white chocolate bread pudding. The roulade was a BIG hit- as was Gravadlax- one person never had it before and loved it, another person thought that he didn't like horseradish but that meal changed his mind!

Having an allergy didn't seem to be an inconvenience as our food came to us without the usual 'and who's the one who wants a gluten-free meal' instead it was just placed infront of us without the food we were allergic to. The service was very personal until pudding. Our dessert plates were never taken away from us and we were left in limbo about what to do about paying for around 45 minutes. I went to find somebody- couldn't find anyone who I saw earlier and asked a chef to help me. A lady came over and explained that we had to pay at reception separately which was an inconvenience for all 26 of us doing that. The way that it was said was that we were expected to know this and to do it now sort of thing. In the end, the lady brought over a total bill to us- but it took a while to come to that compromise!

In short, the staff went over and beyond our expectations and we got a fantastic meal for a small price. We had a fantastic time and hope that we did not disturb many people with our noisy secret santa presents! The only downside was a sort of neglect we got at the end of our meal but to be fair we did stay there longer than we expected!

I treated my husband to a relaxing 2 night stay for his birthday which I got on offer via the internet. We enjoyed our experience and were delighted to be upgraded to a juniour suite which was located on the ground floor (perfect as we had brought along our spoiled pooch for the experience) Unfortunately on checking out a confusion arose as to the deal I thought I had secured. Thankfully everything was taken care of by a professional polite and courteous manager (I am sorry I do not remember your name) stayed 7th october 2010 and also sorry its taken so long to write this review) but I would like the higher managment to be aware that this young man ensured our stay was exceptionally pleasant and that he is an asset to your com pany

“On my way to Bath - A real hidden gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2010

1 LOCATION: With a good SatNav, the hotel isn't hard to find. It probably took us 30 mn to drive from bath to it. The drive is great (countryside). 2 BUILDING: The buidling is impressive. If you are looking for a historical house, you will like Hunstrete. 3 WELCOME: Great welcome. Staff very willing to help. We were looked after very well. 4 ROOMS: We have a great room! A little old fashioned, but very British! 5 BATHROOM: Same as for the room. 6: DINNER: n/a - We had dinner in a fantastic local pub! 7 OVERALL: We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. We will go back whenever possible!

“Graceful retreat we stumbled on”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2010

My boyfriend and I stumbled over this manor house after being totally disappointed by the standard of b&b`s in Bath. Although on the pricier side of b&b accommodation, when you put into perspective of how much a manor of this size would cost to run, cost of linen, cleaning, gardeners, maintenance, etc it is a truly good value break a way. We paid £140.00 for a night in a super king double suite. Luxury toiletries, bathrobe. However it could benefit from having a trouser press, and a tea/coffee facility tray. A quality restaurant with linen tablecloths and napkins was another luxurious touch, disappointingly more and more restaurants are doing away with. I agree with other comments that it does need a little TLC, but over all a luxury that was really welcomed. We went on to stay at another Von Essen hotel because Hunstrete House was so welcoming! I would rate it with 4 out of 5 diamonds for guest accommodation.
