“Cold comfort at the Mill House”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Booked through KGB Deals for a birthday treat for another couple, the Mill House proved to be a let-down. A charming Cotswold exterior in picturesque Kingham, the Mill House should have been a country treat. However the complete absence of heating in both our's and our friend's bedrooms on one of the coldest nights this Winter left us sorely unimpressed. The evening meal was enjoyable, however the extended wait for it was not so. Although generally helpful, the on-site staff were rather left exposed by the absentee manager - who had not seen fit to arrange for adequate alternative heating even though, at 11pm, the staff on duty announced that the manager would not be at the hotel for a further 13 hours. Deeply disappointing.

Room Tip: Get one with heating in Winter

This guest was one of a party of four who checked in for a two night break on Friday 3rd February. Due to a boiler pump fault there was hot water but no heating in five rooms. In the absence of myself the Restaurant Manager was present at all times and by way of an apology provided a complimentary a la carte dinner with wine for the four guests on their second night.
The faulty pump was repaired by 8:30am on Saturday morning.

“Very Pleasant Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

If you have read back through the reviews you will be pleaed to know that the 'grumpy' barman has gone! Someone has also previously complained about poor English from some of the staff - last weekend this was nonsense!!
The staff and service all round were excellent with extremely tasty and well presented food - good quality linen and matching crockery etc. How some visitors can complain about a limited menu beats me as for two nights there was a choice of about a dozen or more main courses, and a similar number of various and imaginative starters.
OK so there is an achilles heel but it is not quite as bad as some may make out. The beds are very firm. However they are not terribly old, they are not broken and sagging but many people would prefer softer (includes my wife and myself).
The furniture does match the style of the holel. If you want light oak built in chipboard units then this hotel is not for you. The room was very clean (rm 16). It was not chipped and battered, the towels were fine, the tea tray was very generously supplied and we had no difficulty plugging the kettle in without 'blocking the tv screen' - get a life somebody!!
In conclusion a real value for money break. We have paid a lot more money even in big chains and had far worse stays. We would go back.
Thanks to everyone at the Mill House.

“Underwhelming”

Afraid to report not much has changed at the Millhouse. On a good note we enjoyed our first nights dinner and although not all to our personal taste it was well presented and of a good standard.
On to the bad news, well we were shown to our room, room number 24 which is in the 'lodge' which is detached from the main hotel and although just next door forms part of the conference centre. For us that detracts slightly from the benefits of staying in a hotel as we had to venture out to get to breakfast and dinner and does not have the same appeal of staying in a quaint hotel. We were booked into a 'superior' room as we had our 2 little ones with us. On arrival we were pleased to find a travelcot and child's bed had been provided as expected. Unfortunately now having read previous reviews nothing had been done about the main beds. 2 very hard singles to make the double which could have been acceptable but so noisy there is just no way to get any decent rest!
Staff were polite and friendly but overall but having seen past reviews it seems they do not take feedback to heart.
In summary the outside charm is very luring, location and the food is good but the decor does let the interior down.

Room Tip: Book in the main building and hope for the best.

“A Country Retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Stayed at Mill House Hotel last weekend. I went with my sister having seen the winter offer on Travel zoo. Our room was fine, clean, spacious, and with nice bed linen and with lovely views over the grounds. We had dinner one evening and the food was of a very high standard.
The hotel is situated on the edge of a village and is a perfect location. for walking. The only down side was the lounge was very quiet and slightly oppresive, I think some music would have been helpful. The staff were helpful when approached but there was little enagement with guests.

Room Tip: You may need to state if you prefer twin beds or a double

“Enjoyable, welcoming stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Having read some of the other reviews we were a little bit apprehensive - however, apart from the two single beds making a double, everything else was excellent. We stayed in room 10 overlooking the lawns and stream, in the main building, staff were all very helpful and friendly, breakfast was freshly cooked and excellent. Kingham is well located for visiting this lovely part of the Costwolds, I'd recommend The Mill House but if the management are reading this, get some double matrasses which will shut a lot of people (including me) up !

Room Tip: I guess avoid the rooms other have complained about, 10 was good.
