“Weekend Party in Bamburgh”

Stayed at the Mizen Head and a pleasant place it was too. Staff very helpful and efficient. Hotel was very quiet, out of season, but even then I suspect it would never get noisy. Room was spacious and very well priced, ( we got a discount as there a few of us.)Had a full well cooked individually chosen breakfast and service was excellent and cheery. No music thank goodness, can't stand hyper DJs after a night's partying. Lunch was a buffet for our group and it was well presented, neat and of reasonable quantity, with some nice little touches. Our night time party was held in the Victoria Hotel, (owned by same person who has the Mizen Head.) Nice function room, (for 100) very good carvery buffet and lots of ale choices in a pub atmosphere in the adjoining bars. All in all not a lot to say about faults. One criticism .....some tidying up on room paintwork needed over the winter ....before next season.

Room Tip: Front of House...simply a better view.

“Book by phone!”

Very nice hotel with a great restaurant that is focussed on local seafood. Staff are very helpful and restaurant service is excellent.
Rooms are clean and fairly spacious though there is an issue with noisy floorboards. Nice comfortable bar area.
Beware of making bookings through the website. We did and the full price was charged to the card at time of booking and then we were almost charged again at check out as the transaction hadn't been logged on the hotel IT system.
The staff sorted this very quickly though and we will undoubtedly stay again when we are in the area.

Room Tip: As above book by phone

“Excellent lunch”

We had a very good lunch here today - excellent food (great choice of fishy things) and, while work was still being done outside (where we would have preffered to have sat, as it was a decent day) and service a little harrassed, everyone was polite and friendly and we will definately be back on a day when we want something other than pub food.

“All show and little substance”

We went to eat dinner on a Sunday night. Maybe it was the chef's night off. The crab meat was watery and bland - maybe it had been made up the day before? We had had the same crab dish only a day or so earlier at The Olde Ship Hotel in Seahouses when the the flavours had been rich and complex and the textures a mixture of firm and creamy - so maybe we were unduly influenced by a recent experience of a quality kitchen. The "local" Calamari were probably well sourced but they were poorly cooked, being rubbery and demanding a lot of chewing, with a textureless coating and lacking any sweetness of flavour. Lamb chops looked good but again lacked flavour probably because they had been grilled at too low a temperature and for too long - all the fat was flabby and uncooked. Chips were a most bizarre almost orangey colour and tasted of nothing. The young girl who delivered our food thought that passing plates across one diner to reach the other was a preferable to walking around the table. Oh, and the house white was served at an arctic temperature although as it warmed it revealed only a truly unpleasant acidity - we left more than half the bottle untouched. The decor was lovely.

“will never be back!!!!!!”

Wen we arrived at the hotel they had NO record of us, website for the hotel is from a previous owner, but they still take booking online and payment as the website is still running!? Someone else had booked our room, so the guy on reception siad he would ring his son (the owner). He said he put the phone down on him but they had one small room left! how professional! he showd us our room which was very small. he said his son would be back soon and he would speak to us. During the time we waited a truck arrived and stated to lay a new gravel carpark outside, so very very noisey. It was becoming obvious that the hotel was half finished and should not be open and the website closed.
We were given an apology for the mix up and that they were trying to sort the website out and turn the place into a more exclusive kind of hotel.
The only thing going for this hotel is the quality of the food, we had an excellent meal in the evening.
On leaving we were asked why we had not arrived for breakfast? we had not been told that they even offered breakfast as were told nothing when we arrived! so we were told we were to late and thay had now finished serving. We went to pay for the evning meal and were told they had no record of this do we had to tell them what we had! we were offered no discount for the room which was not worth £100, very small, bad linen, iron with no ironing board!
This was the worst organised hotel we have ever stayed in and really ruined one night of our holiday.
