“Lovely food, poor quality rooms for the price..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

We travelled here for a wedding & it really is in a lovely spot..
Disappointed with the rooms though really expected more for the money.. Boiler also very noisy which disturbed us during the night somewhat..
The food at the wedding reception was lovely but I was disappointed with the vegetarian breakfast I really do like to have veggie sausages & all I got was tomato's & mushrooms- incidentally very nice & tasty not substantial though...

Thank you for your overall positive review.
We've never previously been asked for vegetarian sausages and it would be unviable to stock them unless kept frozen, which would be against our ethos of all freshly made locally-sourced food. Our award-winning kitchen team, when asked, will accommodate all dietary requirements and we ask everyone about this on making accommodation bookings so we can plan accordingly. Vegetarian breakfasts are made fresh to order and we usually offer mixed vegetables, beans, mushrooms, sauteed potatoes and any egg dish made to order.
The boiler is located off the kitchen and cannot be heard in any of the bedrooms. We believe the noise may have been from a shower pump or fan over-running on its timer or from the cellar cooling, which can sometimes be heard, as it otherwise very quiet here. we have addressed this by turning it off late at night.

“The Wedding Of Our Dreams!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2010

We recently held our civil ceremony and wedding reception at the Moorcock Inn. We were first struck by the stunning location and olde-worlde ambience. It then became apparent on speaking to members of staff, that they were perfectly happy to tailor the wedding WE wanted, which made a pleasant change from other venues where rules and regulations were more the order of the day. We left that initial meeting convinced we'd found our venue. After this came the change of management, which worried us a little, but we were then most impressed with the new management staff when we met them.
For the wedding itself, the venue looked absolutely gorgeous, the staff were extremely helpful and accommodating as to the decoration and personal touches we wanted. The food, as we had found out during meals on previous visits, is absolutely superb. Steve the chef created a menu based on our preferences, and easily adapted this to accommodate vegetarian guests, and guests with various food allergies. The quality and presentation of the food, all our guests agreed, was faultless. Prices at the bar are reasonable, the staff are calm and efficient, yet friendly and attentive. The bridal suite is a very large and beautiful room with a gorgeous view and lovely personal touches. Our guests spoke highly of their rooms as well. Breakfast the following morning was also of a very high standard.
If criticism is to be made, it is that admittedly the water heating system is in need of modernisation. In order to compete with other hotels of similar standard, this really does need attention. We are sure that in the near future the new management will attend to this. This is, however, the only negative point we can make. Overall, if you are looking for a venue for a civil wedding, reception, or indeed any other function, we would highly recommend The Moorcock Inn.

Thank you for your great wedding testimonial. We've had some great function reviews this year that can be seen on our website word for word. With regard to the boiler, we acknowledge that on rare occasions when the hotel is fully occupied, loss of hot water can be a problem, because someone may leave a tap on and run off all the stored hot water, even though our tank is of commercial dimensions and capable of storing enough hot water for 20+ showers. Recently, the boiler has closed down at 1 a.m. until 6 a.m, when normally no guests want a shower or bath, because of complaints about the hot water pumping system from one room, We have just fitted a new heating management system and the boiler no longer needs to be completely shut off and will fire up automatically to keep our stored hot water topped up.

“Pride in the service but no pride in the building”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

This hotel has a lovely location overlooking Pendle Hill, Clitheroe and moorland, yet it needs major work to make this an enjoyable place to stay. The exterior of the hotel, and its extensive land, are tired, faded and unkempt and closer inspection reveals that much of the structure looks like it might fall down at any moment! The bar and, strangely, the ladies loos are smart but the rooms are unacceptably expensive for their state. Our party had three rooms which had a number of problems. They weren't clean, none of the showers worked (no hot water and, on the second day, no water!), the bathroom door didn't shut properly, carpets were stained and the kettle was so filthy that we daren't use it. Throughout our stay, the staff were friendly and helpful but this didn't really make up for the fact that, at £80 per room, this was very expensive for a poor stay. We did complain and they knocked money off the bill. We hope that, in time, they will be able to give this place the TLC it needs to become a lovely hotel - something that must be essential to compete with the many wonderful hotels in Bowland.

We took over this hotel 4 months ago as leaseholders and have inherited a lot of the issues the reviewer refers to. As leaseholders, we are primarily the operators of the hotel and as such the reviewers acknowledges that the standards of service were very good. The freeholders are primarily responsible for the condition of the hotel. Obviously, good general condition is essential to successful long-term operation and thus we have commenced refurbishment work starting with the public rooms (bar/toilets), which the reviewer has experienced. What the reviewer has not seen is the new borehole water supply system, repaired sewage system and rebuilt heating system (ongoing during their stay, hence the need to turn of water on occasion). There is ongoing minor works on various parts of the hotel (new cafe/carvery) and on some rooms, but Rome was not built in a day and major works take planning and time to set-up/execute, especially where they require agreement being reached with the freeholders and any necessary permissions. Our priorty is currently external repairs to roofs and drainage prior to winter, but once the current wedding season is over, we will commence full room refurbs on two parts of the hotel.
That said, we believe that the rooms are a reasonable standard locally following complete internal refurbishment in 2005 and complaints or bad experiences are infrequent. If they do happen we offer suitable replacement rooms and make repairs asap. This hotel is a fantastic historic building in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but the superb views come at the cost of being on the top of a Fell, which leaves the hotel weather-beaten and in need of constant work. Therefore, unlike previous operators, we have a full-time maintenance man.
With regard to other hotels in the Bowland Area, there are only 2 comparable hotels, being The Gibbon Bridge and the Inn at Whitewell, but both these venues are circa 60% plus more expensive than The Moorcock Inn for rooms/food and drink and have been under continuous operation for decades, so simple comparisons are unreasonable. We have an award-winning chef and a great location and believe that we offer excellent service and great value for money.

“Stunning location, great food, lovely staff, very relaxing spot”

Worth the trip off the A59 up to this old country inn for the stunning views over the Ribble Valley and Pendle Hill. Staff were very welcoming and met the new owner, Steven, who is also a top Chef, as the food was good local stuff - the mixed grill was excellent value. Room was clean and comfortable and had free wi-fi, though a few paintwork and carpet marks here and there, though the new owners say they are just refurbishing them this summer - only needs a lick of paint in places really. Nice traditional decor and very quiet, so had a great night and was ready to get back on the road next day after the best breakfast i've had a long while.
