“Perfect country town hotel”

The George is just what you hope you will find in a charming small town like Cranbrook.
Nothing disappoints. The staff were attentive and cheery, the breakfast well presented and copious, our bedroom charming and quirky....large and comfortable. Nice dinner in the brasserie downstairs.
For me the best aspect of the George is that it is the hub of the town. In the morning, there are mums chatting over coffee having dropped off the children at school, people meeting on the way to the shops. It is busy, warm and friendly. There is activity all through the day and after work, people meeting for a drink in the bar, or a meal. As a visitor, one feels welcomed and included in the activity of the town. I would highly recommend a stay and in the winter months (check this) there is a winter saver so that a second night is half price making The George even better value for money.

“A lovely time at the George”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

We had a lovely time at the George. We had a nice big room, with a walk in closet and large bathroom. The bed and furnishings were comfy, and the room was warm and quiet.

We had breakfast and dinner in the restaurant, and both were superb, with attentive and friendly service.

I would not hesitate to recommend the George to friends and family in the future.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2, which I'm told is one of the nicest rooms in the hotel - big and airy, and...

“Incredibly disappointing experience”

My family and I booked a table for 6 people for Christmas Lunch at The George. Now, when I say I was excited about the meal, this would be a huge understatement. I’d heard great things about the food, I knew that the atmosphere was luxurious (massive log fires, big squashy leather sofas, guilt mirrors etc) and I was very impressed by the Christmas menu that we had selected from. Their first mistake was seating us in a window banquette that was 6 inches above the table that we were eating on. Therefore, my poor brother could hardly settle down and enjoy his food as he was about 4 foot away from his food. We were also right next to the bar where a lot of very tipsy revellers were barging past and knocking our chairs. The starters were revolting. My partner and I ordered paté which we fed to our Border Collie. The main course was better, but not exceptional. The waiting staff never bothered to offer us a wine list. They left us sitting there for 50 minutes between each course with our dirty plates in front of us. We had to try and get someone’s attention every time we wanted a drink. The manager was drunk. Paralytic. He could hardly string a sentence together and flatly refused to clear tables. My parents just wanted to get home by the time pudding arrived (3 hours after we got there). I sent them home and waited a further 30 minutes for the bill by which time we were upset and cross and complained extensively to the poor chap that was unlucky enough to have to bring us coffee. It was a farce. The bill was nearly £500.00. This experience will prevent me from visiting The George again despite the fact it is on our doorstep and is dog friendly.

“Rude manager!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Me and my boyfriend stayed here once before and had a lovely time. So we thought we would go back for a couple of nights, however we were kept awake past 2.30am by people in the bar. We stayed in the heather room and u can hear everything downstairs and although the people in the bar weren't being that noisy it kept us up as we could almost hear what we they were saying!! Nevertheless we woke up the next morning tired and wanting to go home. We explained this to the manager and said we want to shorten our stay due to lack of sleep due to the noise in the bar but he still charged us £50 so in total we spent £165 for a rubbish nights sleep, then to add insult to injury he said their cant have been people there at that time as he locked up and there was no one there when he left!! What annoyed me the most is that he didn't even believe what we said. This used to be my favourite hotel but I can honestly say I will never go there again.

“Lovely staff, lovely room!”

A really delightful last minute booking. Stayed in the Heather Room, which was charming and very clean.
The bathroom was excellent with a fun whirlpool bath.
Breakfast was great and dinner in the bar was fine.
The only downside was that some noise from the bar could be heard in the room, when television was off.
Staff very helpful and friendly.
Would recommend for a romantic getaway!

Room Tip: Heather Room - excellent
