We greatly enjoyed the May Bank Holiday weekend at the Benchmark. Our room was on the ground floor of this substantial house, actually two houses converted magnificently into one by Angela and Nigel. They have paid great attention to getting all the details right. The sheets, the towels, the bathroom "amenities" were up to 5-star hotel standards, spotlessly maintained, and the public rooms are attractively furnished. The landscaped garden provides an attractive view from the dining room, where you can breakfast sensibly or go for the scrumptious 'full English'. (Go for it!)
We parked the car at the Benchmark each evening, preferring the brisk ten minute walk into town for dinner. Ask Angela & Nigel for their restaurant recommendations. We enjoyed three very different cuisines: bistro, oriental and local seafood.
Our stay was a fun break in relaxing surroundings and we hope to return.

I loved the sound of this place from the Tripadvisor reviews so booked by email for myself and my parents, over 4 weeks in advance of our trip. I received an aknowledgement saying 2 rooms had been reserved for us. I phoned up a few days before our arrival date to get directions, only to find we did not have rooms reserved after all. The owners had my email but had not attempted to contact me. They said the fault was mine because I had not paid a Visa deposit, even though this was at no time specified in their initial emails.
Hope no-one else falls in the same trap.

My partner and I stayed here for a 2 night romantic getaway. We booked it after reading the excellent reviews on this site & even then it exceeded our expectations. The house & garden are beautiful and Angela & Nigel were so welcoming. The food was special and will satisfy even the largest appetites. The room was spotlessly clean, with a comfy bed and excellent hospitality tray. If you want a little bit of 5* luxury at an affordable price - stay here.

We felt compelled to post a review after spending the most wonderful weekend with Nigel and Angela in their beautiful house. This is the most outstanding guest house. The attention to detail with all the little extras like soft towelling robes, hair dryers and hospitality trays in all the rooms really makes for a comfortable stay. As a group of 14 we took over the entire house and have never been so well looked after. Angela's breakfasts are outstanding. If you are looking to stay in spotless, comfortable surroundings and appreciate great food this is the place for you!
