“JUST PERFECT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

I stayed at Papillon for five nights with my girlfriend and parents. This was my first time to stay at a B&B and after being spoilt by this experience, hotels will just not feel the same.

As many others have said before, the rooms, gardens, pool etc are beautiful. The breakfasts - to die for. But above and beyond all that, the personal, friendly, and gracious service, and helpful local advice, from the hosts: Maureen and Stephen, made our stay as good as it could possibly have been.

If you are concerned about privacy, you needn't be. Maureen and Stephen are there if and when you need them, but otherwise your part of the house, including beautiful verandah and pool area, are yours alone.

I was concerned about being too far away from 'the action'. I needn't have been. There are several restaurants, shops etc a very short drive away, and one of the highlights for us was eating our dinner on the verandah, by candlelight, overlooking the beautiful tropical surrounds. If you want romantic, this is the place for you.

Mossman turned out to be a great base for sightseeing as well. Close to Port Douglas and its attractions. And centrally located for a visit to the Daintree/Cape Tribulation and even the Atherton Tablelands - all of which we thoroughly enjoyed.

All in all I can't recommend Papillon highly enough. When I am fortunate enough to return to far north Queensland I will not hesitate for one moment to book in there again.

“Beautiful garden & friendly hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2011

We stayed here 2 nights & would have returned if they hadn't been booked. Just 2 double rooms, so no glossy brochures etc, but what a find. Their garden is truely full of butterflies and local birds. The room was great and included a hammock on the veranda and a small swimming pool. Free wifi included. Just couldn't recommend this as a place to stay highly enough.

“Relaxed tropical luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2011

This was a second stay for us, having stayed for just a couple of nights in 2006 with our teenage children. Having had such a good experience last time, we sought out Papillon again, this time on our own for 7 nights - and enjoyed it even more. The environment is beautiful with the quiet tropical gardens and lots of visiting birds and butterflies (Ulysses, Birdwings, Lacewings) -- true to the Papillon name!
The room is spotless (serviced daily) and quite roomy, tastefully decorated, and the bed is extremely comfortable. We particularly enjoyed starting each day with the sumptuous breakfasts on the upstairs verandah, and sitting on our own private verandah in the quiet evenings by candlelight after our days' outings.
Maureen and Stephen are a wealth of knowledge and gave us lots of local tips for outings, well-known and lesser-known walks, bird watching and anything else we were interested in -- like our day trips to Undara Lava Tubes and Mareeba Wetlands. Everything you could want is available (minifrig with crockery and cutlery, wine glasses, microwave, toiletries, pool towels, good coffee and tea with homemade shortbreads, books and other reading material, Wi-Fi internet ... ) and if it wasn't, Maureen and Stephen offered it (e.g. Maureen did our laundry and lent us an esky). We're not really big on swimming, but the pool was crystal clear and so inviting, we did take a dip.
This is the perfect environment for us - away from the crowds but central to all the beauty of the forest and ocean of the Daintree, Mossman Gorge, beaches and Tablelands. Normally we'd stay somewhere where we could cook, but with the microwave, frig, cutting board, crockery and other implements, we could prepare our own lunches to take with us and eat at home in the evenings -- though we also ate out. There are quite a few options for good restaurants and cafes in Mossman which aren't too pricey: Sugars, Mojos, Goodies are a few. Goodies also had a few good options for take-away (Thai green curry or butter curry with rice, vegetarian lasagne, quiche and salad etc, plus excellent wraps) that worked well for microwaving back at home for dinner. The supermarket had a few options that would work just as well (pre-prepared pasta dishes, soups etc)
Being so close to Mossman Gorge, we were able to go several times -- and at very quiet times to miss the crowds. We saw a cassowary on two occasions up very close on the sand right next to the river! We also saw bandicoots, crocodiles, and a variety of other birds and wildlife, without needing to go on a tour to see them.
We had a wonderful relaxing time. It was like a second honeymoon in lots of ways -- 6 months after our 25th wedding anniversary!
We have done quite a lot of travelling in central and western Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and Papillon is one of the best places we have stayed. We would recommend Papillon wholeheartedly.
Thank you Maureen and Stephen for your perfect balance of gracious yet unobtrusive hospitality.

Room Tip: we had the corner room which has more natural light and verandah space, but the other room is still...

“A retreat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

Perfect location, beautiful rooms, lovely couple, and amazing breakfast. I just wish the breakfast time was a but more flexible because I like to wake up later than 7:30 am when I am on holidays.

“Simply wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2011

Maureen and Stephen really do justice to the definition of a good bed and breakfast. From a warm welcome to absolutely excellent breakfast they are fantastic hosts and make you feel right at home. They are very helpful in finding the right things to do in the area or happy to just let you sit on the deck by the pool lounging.
Peaceful location and wonderful private rooms, this B&B is near to Mossman Gorge and just a short drive from Cape Tribulation and The Daintree. A beautiful area to visit and we would highly recommend Papillon as your place to stay.
