“Luxury and location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

The Taihoa Holiday Units are a fabulous place to stay. The location, a few yards from a spectacular beach, with views to Dunk Island would be enough to make this place special, but the architect designed property and units are also splendid. Considerable thought has obviously gone into the design of the property to incorporate the owners and guests accommodation and the result is impressive. The spacious units are very stylish and the quality of the fixtures and fittings is high.
I'd recommend a stay here without hesitation.

“Lovely relaxed accomodation, very helpful owners”

Myself and my partner stayed at Taihoa for 3 nights in November 2011. The unit was spotlessly clean and roomy. We were upgraded into unit 1 which has a huge bath in adition to a shower. The units are right on the beach and it is lovely to fall to sleep with the sounds of the waves crashing. There are only a few units in the complex so it is very quiet and peaceful there but they are near enough to Mission Beach to do any tours you wish to do such as sea kayaking (which I also recommend) or white water rafting. The owner Tracey is also lovely and very helpful, she even gave us a lift back into town as the taxis are expensive.

Room Tip: Unit's 1, 2 and 3 face the ocean.

“The perfect place to relax and unwind”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

We have visited many beach resorts north of Cairns so we decided on this occasion to go to Mission Beach upon a recommendation from friends. The first step was where to stay. Having worked in the hospitality and accommodation industry for many years I knew what I was looking for. I did my research and we finally decided on Taihoa Holliday Units at South Mission Beach and stayed there for seven days and were not disappointed.

From my first contact with Tracey over the telephone I knew that we had selected the right property ( but you never know until you arrive ). She was very polite, helpful and only to pleased to answer all my questions on Taihoa and Mission Beach.

Upon our arrival we were greeted by Tracey and shown our unit which directly overlooked the beach - beautiful views of the beach and ocean. She showed us all the amenities in the room and explained how to operate all the appliances. We were then shown around the exterior of the property.

Taihoa is situated in a very quiet and tranquil area of South Mission Beach and is directly opposite Dunk Island.

The units are very spacious with a large bed area, bathroom, dining areas and kitchenette with two burner stove. They are fully self-contained with microwave, toaster, cutlery, crockery and utensils. TV, DVD and CD players are also in each unit. Taihoa also has laundry facilities and a large saltwater swimming pool which was very clean and in spotless condition. Off street parking is also provided.

Taihoa is the ideal place if you want peace and quiet with no interruptions and no disturbances. You can read, go for walks along the beach, bush walking and short scenic drives. We had a swim every afternoon and evening as the average temperature during our stay was 31 degrees celsius. After our swim on two occasions we utilised the large BBQ which was very new and clean - eating and drinking under the stars, with the waves lapping the shores - life could not be any better.

If you have to venture away from Mission Beach I would suggest a drive to Tully ( Tully Gorge ) and Innisfail. The inland route to Innisfail is very picturesque and you pass Paronella Park ( a must visit ).

South Mission Beach has all the amenities you need for a stay. Close by is the post office, bank, supermarket, newsagent, doctors surgery, service station and many smaller shops.

There are many eating establihments available in the area providing various cuisines from Asian, Italian, European to Australian meals at reasonable prices. We can highly recommend Blarneys and Scotties at Wongaling Beach.

Tracey was the perfect host. She kept her distance from you and did not interfere in your affairs but was always there for you if you needed help or advice. We would certainly recommend Taihoa Holday Units to any person seeking a quiet and relaxing break or holiday. In fact we enjoyed ourselves so much that we have booked to return in March 2012.

“Even after a Cyclone - this place is beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2011

We stayed here not long after Cyclone Yasi had gone through. The trees were just beginning to have some growth appear on them and there was some sand still on people's front lawns and down the side of the roads, but at Taihoa - everything was normal. Tracey and her grounds people had obviously worked very hard to get things right. These units are a delight - spacious, nicely appointed and exceptionally clean and well maintained. Tracey is a quiet and unobtrusive host striking the right balance of helpful conversation, checking that we had everything and then leaving us to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We had the place to ourselves, BBQ'd around the pool for the first night and then cooked on the hob inside the next. There is everything you need to cook a simple but enjoyable meal. Shops are a wee distance so take in everything. There are eating places around but we just wanted to relax and not have to get changed to go out. The pool was great - spent some hours just reading and relaxing. The beach is divine - a huge long stretch of sand and water. The sound of the sea at night was very soothing. There were very few people on the beach, some fishing with a net and they didn't have to go far off shore to get several. Highly amusing to watch - a cold beer in one hand, wading out with the net in the other! We would definitely go back there, we only had allowed two nights here but to get the mix of walks, swimming and relaxing right we would try for at least four nights next time.

Room Tip: Units 1,2,and 3 all face the pool - great!

Thank you so much for your lovely review. Cyclone Yasi did hit our area pretty hard but it's amazing to see how quickly everything is growing back, and beginning to look like normal again! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us at Taihoa Holiday Units and I certainly appreciate your taking the time to share your positive feedback with Trip Advisor. I look forward to seeing you again on a future visit. Kindest regards, Tracey

“Do yourself a favour......”

A perfect place to go to get away from the hustle and bustle of every day life. The units are just across the road from a stunning uncrowded beach, lined with coconut palms, where you can walk for miles and miles or sit and admire the offshore islands that behold over the tropical blue green waters. After a long wet winter in Adelaide it was nice to be warm and spending time in shorts, t shirts, no shoes and bathers....a good thing. You can swim in the pool out front or in the sea. Great to be able to cool down after a day of sightseeing or someother activity that takes your fancy.
South Mission Beach is surrounded by rainforest with prolific bird life including the cassowary. Be warned that South Mission has only the Beachcomber Caravan Park store for any shopping (limited) but the Mission Impossible Shuttle can take you to the Woolworths at Wongaling if you don't have a car. The bottle shop behind Woolies is reasonably priced when compared to southern prices so you won't go thirsty for that evening G&T beside the pool or on the beach at sunset.
Taihoa units are equipped with a two plate ceramic cooktop and microwave with a bbq beside the pool. Enough to self cater. Dining in general is quite good with two Thai restaurants (Nana Thai in Wongaling and Spicy Thai on the Mission Bay - Sth Mission road), Millers Bar and Grill in Wongaling (they have a shuttle service if required) and then a number of casual dining experiences in North Mission Bay eg. Shrubbery, Jetties and 100th Monkey (best breakfast..perfectly cooked eggs and great fresh juices) . For fine dining / more upmarket dining Elandra in Sth Mission, Castaways and Friends in Nth Mission.
Tracey is an excellent host and can organise anything for you. There are little touches that make a holiday and Tracey added those to our experience in addition to quiet suggestions and conversation.
Taihoa is a great place to relax and unwind. Do yourself a favour and go to South Mission Beach and stay at Taihoa.
