On first arriving at Peppers, Magnetic Island,we noticed a fairly "sterile" environment - from the style of building and reception area, through to the access to each "apartment". For a tropical location, it didn't offer the tropical welcome or greenery we have experienced elsewhere. Our small balcony overlooked the bitumen carpark and IGA store!! It was too hot to sit out there as the air con unit was at ground level and blew extremely hot air over you. Our "wotif" offer included breakfast and daily room service. Well, what a let down. The room service provided only meant someone came and "straightened" your bed - I couldn't even call it "making" the bed as all the creases in the sheets remained and the cushions/pillows were not put back orderly. The bathroom vanity was never wiped/cleaned. The benches were not wiped. A dead cockroach remained on the carpeted floor for our entire stay (4 nights!!). One day our room didn't even get "serviced". The buffet breakfast was hosted by very disinterested staff. There was no warm welcome or guidance for a seat or explanation of the procedures of the buffet. We saw the note near the kitchen offering eggs to your liking - we waited for quite some time then finally got the cooks attention, to be told you put the order in with the staff - staff of which we couldn't locate after they checked our name off the breakfast list. The toaster was a Kambrook 4 slice that took forever to cook and there was a queue every morning. Mmmm, 5 star ........ Whilst waiting at the toaster, other guests were also expressing their disappointment at this so called 5 star establishment. It also took a long time for any dishes to be cleared from the tables - coffee was a self serve setup from a jug - we waited about 15 minutes one morning for the staff to refresh the jug and it was only 8.30. The lift to our 3rd floor apartment was very stuffy as it wasn't airconditioned and the floor was filthy - a piece of what looked like toilet paper, remained on the floor for the extent of our stay. Location was ok and there were a few nice garden beds but overall it was not green and inviting and the majority of staff were not friendly. Certainly not a 5 star establishment and certainly not 5 star service.
