Shaws is above a small supermarket (very expensive) across the road from a beautiful, long, sandy beach. There was a restaurant also beneath it that served fantastic baramundi burgers for around $18. The room was so spacious - bigger than 3 hotel rooms. It was fully self contained, including a separate laundry with washing machine/dryer. The kitchen had everything we needed. The lounge had a huge plasma TV and another in the bedroom. The bed was comfortable. The receptionist was helpful and attentive. The apartment had a balcony that connected the bedroom to the living area and overlooked the beach - bit enough to sun bake on a lounge chair. There is a large lawn area with a small swimming pool for guests only which is private and quiet. Despite the complex being full we did not see another guest. Whilst we never heard any noise from other guests, we did hear the toilet flush every time it was used in the apartment above. It was so loud and unfortunately the guests went to the toilet often through the night. After about 9 pm it was dead quiet outside. But the mornings were very noisy. At 7 am the garbage truck and council workers would arrive to clean. It was pointless trying to sleep. Some mornings there was also a refrigerated truck parked outside the shop, with its motor running, offloading goods. We mentioned the toilet problem to the receptionist who said she was unaware of the problem and would follow up.
Shaws was a fantastic location to explore Horseshoe Bay and spend time on the beach. The walk to Baldy Bay (the nudist beach) was tricky as part of the walk is clambering over boulders and rocks but worth the effort. The beach was almost deserted.
There is a large supermarket at the ferry terminal but it too is very expensive. If you can bring food with you and supplement with restaurant food. Really nice coffee shop called Nourish at Horseshoe Bay that has great breakfasts and lunches.
Magnetic Island is absolutely beautiful and if you are early risers then Shaws is a great place to stay and enjoy your holiday.
