“Central location”

On arrival, we were given a warm welcome by the receptionist and check in was a very speedy process. The hotel did not appear to have many guests and it was very quiet. The room was clean and adequate. We enjoyed our cooling off time in the pool at the end of the day. As it was quiet, we had the pool to ourselves. We didn't eat at the hotel but can thoroughly recommend the Bowls Club for an evening meal.

“Could do better”

Great spot - Room for improvement. We stayed in a 2 bedroom "apartment" with access to large terrace (shared by two other apartments - which was quite nice because we talked to our neigbours) - good sized living area - bathroom and toilet had been recently upgraded (top marks for the style) - HOWEVER - no extra fans im loo, second bedroom was small - laike a prison and it wasw NOT and apartment!! plent of room for a stove, big fridge, washing machione and dryer - but it had none of these - overpriced and misrepresented - great potential

“disappointing”

We were disappointed with this hotel as it lacked warmth. The room was basic and we didn't enjoy a good sleep as it was noisy outside, the bed was hard and cramped and the airconditioner and fan were both noisy. The bathroom is dark. we ate lunch in the Pub and the salad was soggy and we ate dinner upstairs in the restaurant and it was just average. the service at the restaurant was slow and not very professional. I wanted to stay an extra night in Cooktown , so had a look at the Seaview Motel and the deluxe rooms there were superior as well as the better view and quieter position ( and $20 less a night). the 1770 restaurant is a better place to eat.
Nice pool and garden

“Great stay”

Went to Cooktown for wedding. Looked on the internet for accomm, thinking there would be a Hilton or similar, the Sovereign was the most highly rated. It was great. Basic room, a little larger then you would find in a standard hotel. Little balcony overlooking the main street. Cooktown is tiny, so its close to everything. Great hosts. nice pool. Good food. Largest place in the area so very good for groups.

“the best hotel in town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2010

We enjoyed our stay here. On the plus side, the hotel is very well maintained and looks elegant. The pool is large and warm. The rooms are smart and very comfortable with fans and aircon. There is also a laundry for guests which is charged at AUS$4. There is off street parking which is free. The location is also ideal, right on the main street, with our room having a river/sea view. On the downside, the initial reception we received was adequate and functional, though neither particularly friendly nor welcoming. This contrasted with the service we received everywhere else in Australia. We were, however, very satisfied with our stay here and would definitely stay again.
