“Outstanding service! Personalised service! Definitely will go back!”

We read a few not so great reviews before we booked and were quite sceptical of what we would find on arrival, but our mid week stay turned out better than we had hoped for! We will absolutely be back!!!!!

We arrived at Peppers as the last day of a 2 week belated honeymoon and on the eve of our 3rd wedding anniversary. We booked at the last minute and stayed in a luxurious spa villa. It really is a home away from home with everything that a couple or a family would need for a short or long escape with expansive floor space over two levels that really gave us the privacy of a self-contained option with almost all the conveniences of a hotel.

We dined both days for lunch in the Conservatory. The food was fabulous and my husband was not disappointed by the desserts!

They arranged a special reservation for dinner for us at the local Lakehouse restaurant - a competitor to their very own Wild Birch restaurant and arranged a return taxi so that we could enjoy their selection of fine wine. We even received a table by the window on arrival where in the afternoon the local Kookaburra's fly in to be fed - my husband being french absolutely loved it!

The place was absolutely spotless and clean. All new appliances and cooking utensils, a fully stocked mini bar and champagne and wine in the fridge on arrival.

The reception spent the time to share their local knowledge of hikes and walking tracks to visit the local springs and even shared her favourite list of local restaurants. Unfortunately being a Wednesday many of these were not open.

The only downside is there was no room service for breakfast in bed and we had to get up and dine again in the Conservatory. However, the cuisine on offer both hot and continental dishes was worth the short walk from our villa.

On our last day, we also booked in for their spa services. We selected the Total Float & Relax package which included 60 mins Kodo massage delivered by a pair of very strong hands, 60 mins Body Signature Mineral Cocoon (on soft pack bed) (absolutely recommend!!!!), 60 mins pass to The Retreat where my husband and I had it entirely to ourselves. We relaxed in their
mineral water therapy zone where you have tucked away in a secluded, peaceful corner of the spa an indoor/outdoor Mineral Water therapy area with sundeck, guest lounge and open fireplace. Here we enjoyed two 37°-39° mineral water plunge spa pools to revive and relax our very stressed London bodies, and a cooler plunge pool that totally invigorates you. Apparently the transition from hot to cool stimulates the circulatory system, feeding nutrients to every organ and all the tissues of the body. Compared to the local Bath House, these covered spa pools and plunge pool are on the Retreat veranda, overlooking beautiful landscaped gardens so that you feel like you are outside but you have all the protection of being undercover. We were also able to look out and see wild cockatoos dining on the trees outside. A really Australian experience for my husband.

Then we had the saunas to experience...The lavender-infused basalt stone sauna is the only one in the Southern Hemisphere and as to be experienced to be believed. Here the hot rocks are plunged into the copper cauldron filled with essential oils. It takes a while to heat up, but the entire process is automated so that you don't have to keep tipping water on it yourself. Its a really relaxing and beautiful Japanese inspired sauna. From there we then stepped into the infrared detox box where gentle warmth apparently activates the body’s natural cleansing process. Personally I really enjoyed the wet steam room given our previous nights degustation menu at the Lakehouse with wine pairings and the need to detox. Finally we had a 45 min Mineral float facial on soft pack bed. This was much like the previous cocoon experience which my husband absolutely raved about. We left feeling so relaxed and revived - ready to face another cold bleak European winter!

Thanks to the Peppers team for this fabulous experience! The local manager who waved us goodbye with a cheery smile and cheeky comment as I reversed the vehicle from the driveway, to the fabulous waitress who gave us all her local recommendations that we followed to the T and to the great receptionist who met us on arrival. Finally an outstanding vote of thanks to the highly professional spa staff who could not have been more attentive during our therapies.

Peppers hugely disappointing

Our stay at Mineral Springs Retreat and Spa at Hepburn Springs was intended to be a special treat – it sounded wonderful from the website and printed brochures and we’d had excellent visits to other Peppers properties in Australia so we were confident we’d be impressed. On arrival we were given a lukewarm greeting when we said we wanted to check in. First negative impression. Our room wasn’t ready and when we asked whether we could have a swim and sit by the pool we were informed that there wasn’t one. Second negative impression. The receptionist suggested we could wait in the spa where we made ourselves a cup of tea in the rest room. We were unable to view the spa facilities as they were occupied. Third negative impression and we hadn’t even checked in yet. At 3pm we decided see if our room was ready and on our way out of the spa we asked if we could come back for a dip after we’d checked in. “Yes, you can make a booking – it will be $70 each, but we close at 5pm”. We later discovered that the spa has nothing to do with Peppers at all, and is run as in independent operation. Nowhere in Peppers publicity material is this important fact mentioned. We also discovered that Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat and Spa is independently owned and operated and only uses the Peppers masthead and booking service. At reception, no apology was made for keeping us waiting, and by now we were so disappointed by our impression of the place that we wanted to cancel our booking. When we were frostily informed that that wouldn’t be possible we proceeded to check in. No offer to help with our suitcases or show us to our room. Peppers mission statement is “We’re all about service. We’re all about you.” but we saw no evidence of that during our two night stay. With one exception the staff were surly or passively resistant, a sure sign of bad management. Our room was pleasant and the beds comfortable. The small private deck had a spa bath which would have been impossible for an elderly person to get in and out of, and no comfortable chairs to recline in, just hard chairs around a small table. The bathroom was dirty. Dead insects stuck to the ceiling above the shower; a dead spider in the corner of the room; evidence of a bad leak between the shower and the door; cracked tiles and shabby paintwork. The Italianate gardens were very attractive but there was no where we could recline in a lounge chair under a tree and relax. So much for Peppers being all about relaxation. Breakfast was good. To sum up, Peppers met none of our expectations, the staff lacked common courtesy and professionalism and the facilities were far from relaxing and comfortable. We felt that the publicity is misleading to the point of falsehood and cannot recommend Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat and Spa to anyone.

Dear Guest,

Firstly thank you for your feedback. It is unfortunate and disappointing from our perspective thT you did not enjoy your experience with us at Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat & Spa. We will look into why you would have missed our usual warm and friendly welcome all guests should receive on their arrival to our Hotel.

In response to your comments regarding property facilities, we have never advertised our property to have a swimming pool. We acknowledge we were unable to show you through our day spa, however I trust you can appreciate that guests utilising our spa require privacy as we promote privacy and relaxation to our guests at Mineral Spa. We would have been happy to conduct a site inspection at an alternative time as it is only possible to show guests through when we there are no guests in treatments.

Lastly, Mineral Spa is not run as a completely independent business to Peppers and we are not sure how you came to this conclusion. We also, like any other business, have terms and conditions that apply in regards to cancellation of bookings and these were simply applied as they would be for any guest wishing to cancel a booking at short notice.

We pride ourselves on delivering a high quality product in a venue that matches this service level - as is evidenced by our recent Trip Advisor reviews. Our recently refurbished property delivers great value and service in line with its recent re-brand and transformation and we are again sorry that you did not find this when you visited.

“Impressive.......cannot wait to return.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We came for the Day Spa's healing waters and tranquility......we didn't realise the Hotel had been completely refurbished, let alone by Staurt Rattle.....wow what a fabulous surprise!
Cannot fault our stay.
With the Day Spa we were a little lucky as we had it to ourselves.....great steam room, detox box and one of the most impressive Saunas I have ever seen......the wet areas are clean and unique with fabulous views. The staff were excellent.
We stayed in a contemporary superior spa suite...once again could not find fault....apart from the footsteps that could be heard from the suite above.
Next time we will stay in the main building as it is truly magnificent.
Dinner at Wild Birch could not be faulted....small menu but what they are doing they are doing well.....as with the wine list....many surprises to be found :)
Breakfast was lovely especially after a long walk around Hepburn Springs on a misty morning.
All staff were attentive and gracious, especially in the Restaurant.
We left, after rebooking for a future date, feeling elated. What a beautiful experience.
Thank-you Peppers Hepburn Springs
