The Daylesford-Bendigo area somehow seems to have been bypassed on our earlier visits to Victoria. Don't know why, because it's incredibly beautiful, has so many different attractions, and is well-worth exploring.
We used the Carrington Studio at the rear of Carrington House as our base for a 3 night stay in the Daylesford area. It was booked through lastminute.com.au and cost $100 per night. Great value!
It's down a driveway and is separate to the other Carrington House rooms. It has a comfortable double bed, ensuite, basic kitchen, lounge chair for two, small table, air conditioning (which we didn't use, but would be absolutely necessary in summer or mid-winter), heater, etc. Anne, our host, was very welcoming and she obviously keeps the studio very clean and is trying to provide some of the 'little extras' that seem to be demanded these days. We particularly appreciated a big jug of milk (much better than a small carton of milk, or those tiny UHL milk packages; this jug lasted for 2 breakfasts + all the cups of tea in between!) and enough tea bags for more than the whole stay. The Studio is not big, but for the two of us was fine...and the shower was great (plenty of water and loads of hot water).
Carrington House is one street back from Daylesford's main street, and a couple of hundred metres from Coles supermarket and all the (tempting - we succumbed to some things we really didn't need!) shops along the main street, so is very convenient. We particularly liked the takeaway Indian from Anshumann Da Dhaba (probably the best Indian meal we have ever had) and the fresh food shop (named something like Tonees) down near Lake Daylesford.
So relatively inexpensive, clean and comfortable, conveniently located...recommended.
