“Private and quaint.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011 via mobile

This is a sweet little place to stay. We stayed in the basement suite which is actually very bright and light and opens out to a small garden. It was very romantic, if not a little dated. The only real down side was that you can hear through the roof of the people up stairs; the TV, foot steps, the phone ringing, which did detract from the feeling of seclusion.

“cursory - not very welcoming”

I found the experience somewhat alienating. After a cursory reception and handover of key by the owner, lasting 20 seconds, we were directed to search and find our quarters. Our cottage was dimly lit, as is usual with accommodation these days, but at least there were bedlamps (Most hotels seem to assume illiterate customers, judging by the level of lighting provided). However, we found one lamp not working, and later found the audio leads into the TV were broken, hence no sound at all.
Having pre-paid,we exited next morning. Does one check out and say goodbye? Or just disappear? We did the latter, though the owner was just next door. What happened to country hospitality?

“So awful and old - NOT four star!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

My parents visited me from Perth in March and we stayed at Birches. I don't recommend it! It obviously hadn't been redecorated since the 1970s and everything was old, worn, dusty and faded. Spiderwebs graced the window frames and there was some dangerous cracking sticky-taped over in the bathub. None of the magazines in the room were dated post-2000!

We also felt very unwelcome - there were lots of nasty little signs about cleaning up after ourselves, and the owner was weird. It was like staying at some grumpy old Auntie's house when she's made it clear she doesn't want you to stay long and you're a huge inconvenience. If you don't like looking after people, don't run a B&B!

This place is NOT four star. I expected it to be a bit twee from the photos, but I was terribly embarrassed to bring my parents there. We laughed about it (eventually), but it really was awful. Only good thing I can say is that it was close to town.

“Brilliant!”

My girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at the birches. Staying at 'the basement', we found the room very spacious while still retaining a very cozy aesthetic. Decor was warm and homely and there were chocolates and champagne waiting for us on arrival. Cat grave sites in the garden and a large huntsman spider in the barbecue were a bit off-putting, but did not deter us from having a spectacular holiday.

“Very nice but needs to improve cleaning”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2010

I thought it was a lovely place to stay. We were in the blue room on top floor. The only fault I could find (which was a bit annoying) was the shower needed a better clean. The cupboard that holds the crockery was very dusty and also the benchtop area around the kitchen sink. Dusty magazine rack.

A lovely two seater couch in lounge area but shame under all the doilies placed on it were torn fabric and stuffing poking out.

If the above problems did not exist it would be perfect.
