“Snowed In”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Stayed here for two nights,heavy
snow on the first night made it immposible to get out of the car park safely. This in fact added to the charm of the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. The stay seemed like a country house party ! Log fires, snowmen on the lawn! good food and company.Who could ask for more!
The hotel is a little dated ,some of the furnishings were a bit tired but overall we enjoyed the expierence and plan to return in the spring.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of the grounds are to be prefered

“Proper Hidden 'Country House' Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Stayed here to break up a few days on the road for business in the Midlands, and was really impressed. Its a proper old fashioned counry house hotel. and I guess does a lot of weddings (my room was The Bridal Suite). I had a huge room with 4 poster bed (worth the extra for the opulence) and although my colleague had a middle scale room that too was very nice. Both were in the main house, there is a more modern wing that I didnt see. The views from the gardens were great on a sunny winters day when I was there, and the general feel of the place is wood panelled, roaring log fires, nice and welcoming. Overall, really good value for food, drinks and rooms, and I plan to come back to stay with family when we next go to Alton Towers (nearby).

Room Tip: The upgrade rates are well worth it - my suite was huge!

“stay at makeney hall hotel”

We recently had a very pleasant stay at the Makeney Hall Hotel. It was booked for my parents as a Christmas present and we wanted it to be nice. A couple of nights before our trip we looked at some reviews for this hotel and to be honest it frightened us a bit especially the comments about the food left by some guests. However I would like to say that the food was excellent even though we had it from the offer menu which was expectedly limited but everything was beautifully presented and delicious. the breakfast was really good with everything you could possibly wish for and we had no complaints at all.The staff were all also very pleasant. the hotel was warm and the bedrooms we had were huge and the beds very comfortable. the only drawback for my Mum was the fact that the showers were over the corner baths which were very high to get into and she struggled a bit with that. otherwise a very enjoyable stay

“Lovely old house in great location, but didn't quite do it for me”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

The hall itself is a grand old building with some excellent character features in the downstairs common areas, - wooden panelling everywhere, lovely old restaurant function room and a big roaring fire in the drawing room to retire to for a night cap. The restaurant/breakfast room is a large well added conservatory looking out over landscaped gardens across the valley to the peak district. My room was in the main old house - quite spacious, comfortable and reasonably well equipped, although looking a little tired. It showed it's age a couple of times a day, when the heating system burst to life with incredibly loud water hammer which continued until you fiddled with the radiator controls. Access to the WiFi was managed by an insanely silly system of handing out small slips of paper with daily passwords for each individual electronic item. The WiFi signal dropped many times during my week long stay. The restaurant and bar staff were generally friendly and hard working, but the reception staff could do with a short spell at charm school. The restaurant food was pretty good although took an inordinate length of time to serve on the first night even though our party of 30 had been asked by the hotel to take our meal in three sittings. The second time we ate there as a team, they put on more staff and service was much quicker. Conference facilities were OK - I've seen better. All in all, this could be a cracking venue with a few tweaks and attention to detail.
