“This could be so good..but.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I booked a single room for two nights as I was attending a show in the area.
On arrival I struggled to get anyone to answer the reception call where a notice asks you to ring the number, which then rings two feet away from you. A pleasant Canadian chap arrived, and carried my case upstairs, something I was grateful for as it involved several up and down steps, various fire doors and corridors. The room on first impression looked very cramped but clean, something I was later to discover was not the case.
As single rooms go probably the smallest I have ever stayed in but it had a tiny en suite, single bed and tv plus dressing table and a built in wardrobe.
Good things: lovely and warm with rads in both rooms .
Soap and shower gel supplied and clean towels and good bed linen. The bathroom was clean but the basin had a huge crack right through it. The tv worked easily and there was an alarm clock radio provided and a hairdrier.
Bad things: I leaned over to adjust the alarm clock and was shocked to see the area between the bed and the tv table. As a former accommodation provider I knew it had been months not weeks since anyone had cleaned this area. Thick with dust, hairs and bits of rubbish it extended right behind the tv, and it was obvious the room only ever got the bits you see cleaned..
Only one of the room keys worked which by the second day had annoyed me, as holding various items it was a pain having to keep juggling to find the right key.
My friends and I ate in the hotel and all the food was excellent, really good breakfasts, lots of choice etc, and the public rooms gave a choice of quiet bars with gas fires or noisier bars.
There was also a tv room in one area.
The waitresses were lovely, smiling and always doing their utmost to ensure everything was what you wanted, they were a credit to the place. Not so the miserable sod behind the bar, someone needs to explain to him it's the norm to at least smile at the odd customer buying a drink!
The worst thing of my stay for me were the paper thin walls in the rooms. I heard every single word of conversations clearly on both sides and a snorer in another room.
This place could be so good with such a little effort, and a bit of soundproofing, or even making the singles into twins and charging a bit more. My single bed had three great ridges on the mattress too, a memory foam topper would have been much better.. I would happily pay more if these were done.
The location is excellent, we had thick snow and sitting by a glowing fire with a hot drink was wonderful, a Sunday market appeared the next morning sadly I had no time to enjoy it. I'd read some of the bad reviews before booking but thought often it's best to make your own mind up; I'm afraid the problems others encountered turned out to be true, so probabably wouldn't stay here next year.

Room Tip: Don't book a single..

“You get what you pay for.”

We stayed here for one night with a room in "The Cottage" (one of two en-suite rooms on the other side of their carpark). This was a one-night en route stop-over. We had an extremely quiet night with twin beds and no hotel noise. However, it was all very grotty and tired...the bedding and the bathroom (grubby), which had a curious arrangement of the loo IN the shower! But it was £64 room only, and we had booked online with no problems. We chose to have breakfast elsewhere.

Room Tip: For a quiet night, with your car just a metre from the door, choose The Cottage.

“Food and surroundings excellent, but service variable.”

I have been to the Bell on two occasions, and on both times the food was great and the surroundings pleasant. Knowing the food was good and the location was convenient, my friends and I decided to meet for a pre Christmas lunch there a few weeks ago. On arrival, the place was quite busy and bustling, and at first we couldn't actually find a member of staff to show us to our table- not very good. When a waitress did finally show us to our table, she was rather slapdash and unfriendly. I'm not sure whether it was just the fact that it was a busy day, but none of the staff was particularly friendly- borderline hostile in fact, which was a real shame as my friends and I agreed that the food was really excellent and very good value for money.

The building really is lovely- lots of nooks and crannies and even some medieval wall paintings. The facilties were modern, clean and well looked after. I would definitely return, since the food is so good, but the management could do with instilling in their staff that a smile cost nothing!

“do not stop here!”

We stayed 1 night,25th December, first impression in the room the stink of stale cigarette smoke. It was a non smoking room according to the booklet. We were in a rush so just left our bags and went out, when we got back Xmas night, the night porter was on duty, we went to the room, What a dump. Down 3 steps to the dingy shower room, the toilet and washbasin were filthy, I don't think they knew what bleach was, hair, both sorts on the loo and floor. Light bulbs not working dirty tea and sugar container and black cobwebs on the ceiling.A waterproof cover on the bed which rustled and made you sweat all night. I couldn't wait to get out of the place. I filled in the review form, I expect it was filed in the bin. Don't use this place, room 10.

“Not always ding dong!”

The Bell has a wonderful history and is still a building is partly original with add ons here and there. It has been an amazing place in the past and then changed hands to disaster. More recently it has picked up again with good food and friendly service.

Its a great Christmas venue with its beams and Christmas decorations, I think it will improve greatly if people complain at the bad bits and acknowledge the good.

If you stay there sit in the front windows and enjoy watching Winslow, its amazing what goes on!
