“Convenient and Congenial”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

After an initial glitch in our reservation we were given a room. (Advice: Carry your confirmation showing your PAID reservation!) The room was large, clean and had an open closet which was a good place to hang clothes which I washed or just to air out other clothes. The wide, open corridors had comfortable rocking chairs which offered a perfect place to sit and read. The rooms had television with CNN in English if you need to keep up with latest world disaster. The restaurant accommodated our early start for birding and we ate a full breakfast in the dining room at 6:15 am. It included a plate of fresh fruit which they gladly customized for those who didn't like papaya or who just wanted sliced pineapple. Eggs were cooked in any manner one wished. The walk to the ruins was easy and would've taken just a few minutes if there hadn't been so darn many birds to see along the way. We also walked over to the old hennigan plantation on the other side of the hotel and poked around the historic ruins and grounds there. Back at the hotel there were people swimming in the sparkling pool so I tried it. Freezing!!! I was fascinated by the hotel's historic framed letters and pictures relating to the early explorations of the ruins. I found the rooms above the restaurant that are marked with plaques commemorating famous guests, the Kennedy's, Queen Elizabeth, Indira Gandhi, to name a few. I enjoyed my two night stay tremendously.

“Historic Hacienda, hopeless management”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

The property is truly historic and looks stunning from the outside both at night and in the day. The pictures and notes on the wall depicting the world leaders and Hollywood personalities who stayed here is informative. The colourful tiles and open verandahs hark back to a colonial era. We arrived late in the evening for a night's stay and upon requesting an upper level room were allotted one that proved difficult to locate in the dim lighting (327). The bathroom was smelly and dank. The faucet in the wash basin dribbled while hot water refused to come out. There were no towels and it took a while to get them delivered. The hotel is a stone's throw away from the spectacular ruins which is a definite plus. The bar service is awful with the cocktails listed on the menu being non-existent. The restaurant service is good. The buffet range is a tad boring but try the a-la-carte.

Room Tip: Try to ask for rooms in the original block where the famous personalities stayed. These maybe better...

“Great location, OK hotel, terrible management”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

The location to visit the ruins is amazing. The hotel is ok and could use a few upgrades. It does have a nice pool and nice lounge chairs to relax but the room and the bathrooms are a bit dated.
The main issue came from management. Upon our return, we realize that the hotel had put an unauthorized extra charge on our credit card (even before our arrival). Upon contacting the hotel, we were told that they were already aware of the mistake (they had however done nothing to contact us and waited for us to contact them... interesting!! ) we have been promise timely resolution of this error along with email update as to when the money will be sent.
It has been a month and no money and no update. Despite recurrent contact with the hotel, NOTHING. not even an email !
We feel liked we have been robbed and that our confidential credit card information was not protected the way it should have been.

Those issues should be resolved. Credit card fraud is a major concern.

“Welcoming Hacienda”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

You absolutely can't beat this hotel for location! It is literally right across the street from the ruins. They had someone walk us across the street to the nightly light show. The staff was beyond friendly and accommodating. Food was very good (they were making pancakes @ 9pm to make a child happy) Rooms are large, hotel is full of history, beautiful swimming pool and grounds, and the giant bathtub is especially nice for soaking after climbing pyramids all day. This hotel makes an excellent base for touring the surrounding area & ruins (Puuc Route the farthest of these sites is within 20 miles). There is also the Cacao Museum and the artisans town of Ticul Very welcoming, very friendly, rich history, what more can one say. The hotel will also book you a guide to tour the ruins. If you are an English or Mayan speaker, Gamaliel Chan Cen was a delight!!!

“One of the most exiting Maya ruins”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

Hotel itself very cosy. Stuff well trained. We liked the food served. Had an apportunity to have a look at old Hacienda ruins. Astonishing history of BARBACHANO FAMILY , the owners of the land around Uxmal ruins operating a hotel for years with love. A beautiful ruin light show each evening. Amazing place in the heart of the jungle.

Room Tip: We had a corner room. Comfortable beds. Beautiful bathroom.
