“Great trip”

We traveled with 4 couples and signed up for the extra golden package. For the little extra $ it was well worth it.. Private check-in ,internet, private bar. All of our rooms were over looking the carribean sea.The rooms were perfect other than beds and pillows were like sleeping on plywood. I was told by guest services Apple vacations get best rooms. They also had private dinner for Apple guests.

“Decent for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We arrived to the resort at approximately 3am and they were efficient at checking our whole bus in. It did however take an hour or so for the bell boy to bring us our bags to our room. We had booked a room with a king bed which they in turn provided us a room with 2 double beds pushed together. The next morning we asked for a different room but we couldn't get one until 2 days later which was alright. We had emailed 5 days ahead as suggested by other reviews on tripadvisor but we should have done it sooner as none of our requests had been made.

The following day we came home after supper to a flooded bathroom due to a burst pipe above us. They came and cleaned up the mess and fixed the problem but we assumed we would be given another room immediately but we still had to wait until the next day. The couple in the suite next to us had far worse damage but they just got their roof patched up instead.

Once we changed rooms, we had a pleasant stay. It was nice to have such a selection of a la carte restaurants between the 2 resorts (Akumal, Coba & Tulum). Although if we had known, we would have stayed at Tulum as their buffet was much better than our own and we ended up eating there mostly anyway. It is inevitable that at any all inclusive resort that the buffet food will grow tiresome quite quickly, so no suprises there. The Tulum resort appeared to be alot nicer from what we saw also. It was really easy to catch the trolleys to travel between the 3 resorts to use their facilities.

The resort is located about an hour and half bus ride from the Cancun resort, slightly inconvenient but the tour operator gladly offered cold beer on the way from the airport to the resort!!

Overall we enjoyed our stay but wouldn't rush back to stay there again.

Room Tip: Don't be afraid to ask for what you are looking for.

“WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We travelled to Mexico through Thompsons, and their airline because being disabled we were able to upgrade to premier class, thus giving better seating and more room.we travelled as a party of four which meant this cost an extra £1000.00,
We spent 10 hours sat next to the standard class toilet! but the transport is the only thing i can complain about as the hotel and resort is outstanding.everything that you could think of was provided. At breakfast XAVIER & FERNANDO were superb waiters always attentive and extremely good at their jobs.We had the junior suites and ours was equipped for disabled access for wet rooms etc this is a three hotel resort which is vast and travel between them was by little land trains(great fun!) the pools at our hotel are superb and sprawling to different areas
We found that people from the other hotels came to this hotel to eat and swim and take all the sun loungers! so we went the opposite way and still had an amazing time.
The entertainment is better than you would expect with big displays and lots of acts that mime to the songs!(QUEEN,MADONNA,MICHAEL JACKSON etc)but fun anyway.
But back to the sunbeds if you want to get some then you need to get up at 6.30am to put towels down!It seems to be that the Canadians have been taught by the Germans how to do this as they have this down to a fine art!!.The all inclusive package is great and includes all drinks an food as usual but this one does all cocktails and spirits,we spent most of the day by
the pool drinking MIAMI VICE the local cocktail(YUMMY) anyway cant wait to return but will fly by Virgin !!
The best Reps for Thompsons are Lauren,James ,Andrea and Hose !! If you need any help these guys are really good .Oh by the way DO NOT BOOK the VIP Room at Cancun airport as it costs £21.00 and you cant get in its so small and a waste of money.

Room Tip: Ground floor suites are best to see the wildlife,Tapir,Lemur etc

“wonderful time”

My husband and I just got back from our vacation at the GBP Akumel where we spent two wonderful weeks hanging out with his sister and boyfriend. After a 1 1/2 hour van ride we were checked in very quickly and taken to our room which was close to the lobby. Our room attendant kept our room very clean and homey with lots of fresh towels, coffee, towel art and the fridge was always full.
Due to bad weather in Minnesota we arrived a day late and Esther (front desk manager), both Jerry and Mehman (guest services managers), and Alex (our Delta airtine travel rep.) all helped us out tremendously with getting our extra day back to our holiday. Even though it may not have been their job they were truly wonderful and we appreciated it.
The four of us thoroughly enjoyed lounging all day at the sandy beach and at the pool area (near the pool bar of course where we kept Edgar very busy) He could handle any amount of crowd and always had a smile on his face. In the 2 weeks we were there we meet many nice people coming from Canada, UK, States and Germany.
We tried almost all of the Buffet areas (Akumel, Tulum and Coba) for Breakfast and lunch and a few dinners where they had a great variety of food. The Buffet staff and the al la cart waiters were very professional. Some of our favourite dining spots were Mikado,Tortuga and the Mediteranean were we were treated like royalty. Coming from a small town we don't often get out to a 4-6 course meal. There was a variety of evening entertainment were you could either sit outside or inside, get up and dance or just listen and visit. The grounds and buildings are immaculate. Everyone that works there seemed to have a sense of pride in their job and were very respectful to the guest. We definitely want to go back.

My husband and I got back last week after spending 2 glorious and fun filled weeks at the GBP Akumal. (January 16- 30th)
While there, I celebrated my 50th birthday. I can’t think of a more beautiful place to celebrate one’s birthday or wedding or any kind of milestone. Upon returning to our room on my birthday a beautiful 2 swan towel art awaited me on my bed with a happy 50th card. I also received a chocolate shaped cake from the staff at the Mikado (Japaneese) restaurant along with the singing of Happy birthday, what a special feeling that was.....thank you
We arrived at the Cancun airport on time and didn’t wait too long before our coach bus left for the hotel. It took less than 1 ½ hrs to get there so the drive wasn’t bad at all. Check in was friendly and fast and we were greeted with a warm wet towel cloth and a welcome drink that was greatly appreciated after a long day of flying.
I want to thank Mehman Verdiyev (Guest service manager) and Gabriela Reyes (Public relation manager) for all their professionalism and assistance prior to our arrival and seeing to our special requests, which made my 50th Birthday and our vacation one to remember always. You both are truly assets to your profession and we send a Grande Mochas Gracias to you both.
The resort is huge! You have to see it for yourself to understand. Don’t let this be a negative but instead view it as a positive. You will never get bored as there is always somewhere different to explore and the trolley trains are always right around the corner to take you wherever you need to go if you decide you are too tired to walk.
We stayed in the Royal Golden section of the resort in Building 66, right on the ocean.
What a beautiful view we had from morning til night. The sound of the waves crashing would lull you to sleep and if you didn’t want to hear the waves, then closing the sliding doors solved that problem. Our room was spacious and kept beautifully cleaned each and everyday by our lovely, friendly room attendant Deyanira. She would leave fantastic towel art on both our bed and in the bathroom everyday……what a talent!
We left a $2.00 tip each day along with bagged candy we had brought from home. When we left for good, we left our remaining shampoo’s, conditioners, skin cream etc for her. Make sure if you leave anything behind for the room attendant that you leave a note saying it is for them so that they don’t confront any problems taking it off the resort.
We ate at 6 different a la carte restaurants, all of which were top notch. We were entitled to 8 a la carte reservations but found that 6 were enough as we really enjoyed eating at the buffet restaurants too. We ate at the Don Pablo, Mikado, Arlequin, Tortuga, La Dolca Vita and seafood all of which we would highly recommend.
The a la carte restaurant waiters were all fantastic. They are all so professional and always met you with a smile and couldn’t do enough for you. The buffet wait staff was also very friendly and did their best to look after you. You have to realize though that the buffet wait staff are tending to thousands of people every day and can’t spend the same time or attention to you like the a la carte restaurant staff can. What they accomplish in a days work is truly amazing and tipping them a dollar or two is greatly appreciated. Not everyone is in the position where they can tip but if you can, they certainly deserve it!
We ate all three buffets and we liked each one equally. The Coba seems to be more lively for nightly entertainment and the Akumal is more quiet so there is somewhere to go for everyone depending on your likes and dislikes.
There are nightly shows at each of the resorts and outside of the entertainment stage area they have posters posted to let you know what is playing and when ahead of time.
The beach and pool areas are wonderful. Everything is so perfectly groomed and spotless, the groundkeepers work tirelessly …..thank you to all of you.
Lots of excursions available for everyone’s tastes. Your airline travel representative located in the lobby will be there to help you out with all the information. We booked only one as we had done quite a few of them on a previous vacation a few years back
As for what currency to bring? We brought with us US dollars, Canadian dollars and pesos and each was accepted equally.
This is a safe resort and we never felt uneasy. We traveled outside the resort by their collectivo’s (public transportation) to Playa Del Carmen and Playa Akumal (public beach) and were always at ease.
To all of you that are contemplating on going to this resort or have already booked your trip here, you won’t be disappointed. Have a wonderful time, enjoy the beauty and hospitality of these amazing people and Mexico. Learn some Spanish and have fun!
We will definitely be returning.
To all the staff we say Gracias, gracias, gracias! You are truly assets to your professions and the Hotel owners are lucky to have you and should be proud of you all.

Room Tip: We stayed in villa 66 room 14 which was on the second floor and as close to beach front as you can g...
