We just finished a stay at the Grand Palladium, 2 adults, 1 child and 1 teen Feb 3-10 2012. Stayed in building #2 on ground floor (21##). I am not sure of the occupancy rate but the hotel was no where near full, weather was good and we picked up a very, very good deal through Sunwing.
Note the trip from the airport to hotel is about one hour if you are dropping off people at another hotel, if not about 45 minutes.
Our room had just been renovated top to bottom, so no complaints there other then they gave us a smoking room which normally we would not have accepted (I don't even know why they still have smoking rooms?), however as it had just been renovated there was not a trace of smell so we kept it. Only other issue is the A/C is set at 22 c. This is unacceptable and way too hot for sleeping. After our 4th night we managed to find out how to over-ride the control and were able to select our own temperature. If you have booked a room here, contact me and I will tell you how to re-set the temperature. Note to management, you need to address this problem.
Grounds, pool areas, public washrooms all well maintained/clean and I would say most apeared to have been updated recently. Also very environmentally "tuned in" with recycling, motion sensor lights, dual flush toilets and A/C units with 22c minimums!
Plenty of chairs around the pool and on the beach, so no problem getting one each day. It was nice to come down to the pool after breakfast and not be faced with most chairs having been taken by people who were up before sunrise to "save" their spot as we have seen at other AI's.
Never waited in line at any of the bars, restaurants or buffets. Keep in mind though the place was no where near capacity so it may be different when the place is full.
The food was typical AI food and we had no real complaints. Breakfasts were good, excellent omellets, freshly squeezed juice (I saw one review who said there was just Tang, but this is not true), fresh fruit etc... One thing they need to do is better advertise the beach BBQ's and make people aware you need to book.
Beach was fun and we enjoyed the boogey boarding. Also made use of the tennis court on a daily basis. If you play tennis, I recommend bringing your own balls and racquets.
One dissapointment was the Beach Bar was not open, so a walk up to the bar for drinks. In fact when we were there, they stocked the shelves to make it look like a functioning bar and took some promotional photos and then shut it down again! I think if you advertise a service, you should provide it, regardless of occupancy.
All in all we had a very enjoyable vacation and would recommend this hotel as a great place for a family vacation.
