My wife and I booked a room for last Saturday evening. We left the week before for Ontario and left them a cell phone number.
We came off the lake after a day managing sailboat races in Kingston the Saturday before our reserved stay, and inspite of having a confirmed reservation, the inn keeper left a message on our cell telling us that since we hadn't confirmed our reservation (which we did prior to leaving the US), they would need to cancel it if we didn't call back to confirm. We called and confirmed.
A few days later, we received a voice mail on our cell telling us that they had to cancel our reservation due to a family issue. They didn't bother to try and find us anywhere else to stay, and since we were on our bikes with loaded panniers, we weren't able to do the research required to find an alternative reservation.
We pedaled past the B&B on Saturday morning, and the lot looked full. We saw some sites in the area, then pedaled back to Picton and our car for the trip home - a day earlier than planned.
