“Relaxing Stay at Beautiful B & B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2007

Our stay was so wonderful, we only wished we had made our stay for more days.

The hosts were magnificient. Both Brenda and Jose made sure we were well taken care of and then disappearing to give us time to enjoy and relax as a family.

When we arrived exhausted from our drive, we were shown our room. Our room was wonderful, my husband and I shared a large canopy bed and our 4 year old was delighted with his own day bed. The bathroom had a whirlpool tub as well as a separate shower.

As we were bringing our bags in, Brenda brought us refreshments on the porch, as well as set us up in the outdoor hot tub, which was a great selling point for us. Had we been there for longer we would have taken advantage of massages (that can be scheduled). We did have time to enjoy this little town on the island, its lighthouse, the playground right by the light house, as well as hear the frogs in the waterfront area just a short walk from the bed and breakfast.

Breakfast had lots of fresh fruit, fresh coffee, cereals, cheeses, a smoothie, and other things I know that I am forgetting.

We also enjoyed the gallery that the hosts have in a neighboring house. The gallery has a wide variety of beautiful artwork from local artists as well as visiting artists that come and do workshops up there.

Two other things to mention -- the drive between Manotoulin and Sault Ste Marie is gorgeous and well worth it and another fun time is the ferry boat ride from/to the island and the pennisula leading to Toronto.

  • Liked — The hosts were the best B & B hosts. Out door hot tub was devine, the quietness and slowness of the Island was wonderful, the room was perfect for us.
  • Disliked — You need to have time to get there, it makes for the scenic route, but it well worth it if you have the time.

“Made us feel very special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 April 2007

Jay & I are ex-innkeepers whose standard may be too high for many, however our stay at Soutbay Guest House, turned a normal night into a wonderful experience. The Guest keepers were friendly, connected and we felt that we had met friends. The room with its four-poster bed, and jacuzzi bathroom gave us the opportunity for a "romantic" night in Sudbury of all places. If you ever get the chance to stop-over, make this guest-house a must.

“Wonderful B&B; Great Hospitality, Clean Rooms and Comfy Beds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2006

This is a very nice place to stay. It’s centrally located in South Bay Mouth, Ontario. The Host and Hostess are excellent and very accomodating. The rooms are clean and have very comfortable beds. The breakfast was delicious and very healthy.

The spa was very clean and relaxing, I am very likely to return to the South Bay B&B.

I would definitely recommend it to friends.

“A nice play to unwind”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 July 2006

Rather than staying at a Howard Johnson, or some other modern accommodation, our family chose to spend six nights at Southbay Guest House. We were comfortably roomed in two downstairs, and one upstairs, rooms. My wife and I were with her parents (89 and 90), and my mother-in-law and father-in-law needed rooms that were easily accessible, but also comfortable.

We had use of the downstair's kitchen, and the downstair's and upstair's bathrooms (we were roomed upstairs, in one of the three nice rooms there). Throughout the week, guests came and went, but we were never disturbed in our stay. We had lovely breakfasts each day in the on-site Cafe Ole, consisting of a good variety of cereals; fresh fruit cup; a lovely assortment of fresh fruits and nuts; toast; and of course, wonderful coffee (with a secret ingredient). Of course, the conversations with each day's guests were stimulating and enjoyable.

Our hosts, Jose and Brenda, were very welcoming, and took the time to see we had everything we needed. We made a number of wonderful daytrips around Manitoulin island, seeing beautiful scenery and lovely little towns. Manitoulin Island is a great place to unwind, and to slow down a little (or a lot). This was my mother-in-law's second stay here, and I am sure she is already planning a third - I just hope she invites us again :-)

Perhaps one highlight of our stay was the evening a 'Native of Manitoulin Island', as Leroy Peltier called himself, prepared a moose meat dinner, cooked over an open fire of maple, ash and beech wood. Served with wild rice, and stirfried vegetables, and topped off with fresly made rhubarb and strawberry pie, nothing could have been nicer.

Southbay Guest House is not a modern, plasticised, 'room for a night'. Rather, it is a place with character and charm. Stay awhile, get to know the people who work there (thanks to Jackie, Wendy, and Brad for all their care and concern), and enjoy a laid back, relaxed and down-to-earth stay. It reminded me a lot of being in the Caribbean, where people and conversation is more important than a concrete swimming pool, and a marble foyer.

We look forward to going there again.

“Service with a Smile”

My Wife and i stayed two nights in their motel units.
The unit was very clean, quiet and great linen and towels.
When we had our breakfast the next morning, to our surprise we had 3 cerals to choose from, coffee, tea, fruit salad, many kinds of nuts, fruits, breads and i could go on.
My wife and i have travel to expensive resorts ($200 per person) and not had the quality that we received there at Southbay Guesthouse.
Come see for your self.
