“A nice little gem"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2010

We found this B&B while traveling through. The room was wonderful, nicely appointed furnishings, but overpriced. We stayed in the "Williams Room" at 259.00 a night. The bed was very comfortable and bath had a large garden tub with a shower. There was no counter surface to put essentials on in the bath. No air conditioning and the temp was 73 during our stay. The room was hot and stuffy but we were okay after opening windows. There was a ceiling fan which helped. The dining was disappointing. The chef prepared a "pan seared crusted halibut" for me and my husband. The fish was dry, overcooked and void of any taste. The beans were barely steamed and hard to chew and the seasoned mashed potatoes were pretty tasteless and cold. The chef did fix a glass of sweet, iced tea that met my southern girl standards. There was supposed to be wireless internet in the room but it didn't work and no one knew how to fix it. Check-in was slow after having to search the kitchen for someone to help. I was seen but ignored. Check out was also awful. Took 30 mins to checkout as the owner nor the one other person there didn't know the computer or how to do process a checkout. They had to call someone at their home to come in to do it.

“Just spectacular and gorgeous without cutting any corners!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010

Searching for the perfect venue for my dream wedding, took my fiance and I from
Digby, NS, to Cape Breton, NS and many towns in between. No venue gave us the warmth, confidence, and trust that the manager offered us. Her reply to several of our concerns, was that we need not worry, as our special day should be ours and worry free…they would personally take care of the rest…and that, they surely did. There was no “do-it-yourself” checklist. I will forever be thankful, for their hard work, and especially their flexibility, which made our wedding weekend so memorable and perfect. We traveled with immediate, extended family and friends from across Canada and the US, and everyone was very pleased!

DesBarres Manor is a vision of romantic, "victorianesque", and breathtaking natural maritime beauty come to life. It is truly a hidden treasure surely to be discovered by many. A year later, we are still told it was the most beautiful, and magical wedding our guests have attended. We were married on a hill with majestic views, at the Osprey Shores Golf course, overlooking the hills, lush trees, and surrounded by deep blue ocean water on three sides. Nearby, we took photos at a sand beach, atop smooth, big rocks as ocean water hugged them – the sunset was majestic.

The rooms at the Manor are spacious, bright, with large bathrooms. Perfect for such an occasion. Chef Shaun is a definite hidden secret. His delicious meals are still remembered as well. No prior tasting was required in preparation. Once you’ve tasted his meals, you will trust he will prepare the most delicious courses and exceed your expectations. He uses in season, fresh produce…some of which are right from his own garden next to the kitchen.

At the end of your day, you will melt into the most exquisite bed sheets you’ve ever rested on. The details, attention, and care make this place truly extraordinary.

This is not any ordinary bed and breakfast. It is by far unlike any other. You’ve just got to experience it for yourself.

“DesBarres Manor Inn”

Stayed in multiple inns throughout Nova Scotia. This was the best one. Large, well- appointed room and spectacular dinner - one of our best meals ever. First rate all the way.

“Wonderfully Restful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2009

We found this Inn with the help of our GPS and we were very satisfied. We had a beautiful large suite and slept quite well. We were fortunate enough to have the chef preparing our meals for the two nights that we stayed there. Breakfast was nice but the dinners were wonderful.

We were a bit tired from our driving tour of the Maritimes so our first full day there we walked around the town (very quiet in September on a Sunday) and then spent the afternoon on the deck at the Inn and read our books and indulged in a bottle of wine that we had brought along. Quite relaxing.

Audrey, the manager at the Inn, took good care of us and also helped us out with planning the remainder of our trip and gave us a tremendous recommendation for PEI which we can't thank her enough for recommending. By the way, it's the Inn at Bay Fortune, which is where chef Michael Smith got his start.

“A wonderful week-end get away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2009

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at DesBarres Manor and had two relaxing nights in the Sable room. The staff were very knowledgeable and courteous and the food was excellent. Chef Shaun Zwarun certainly knows his stuff! Audrey, our innkeeper was very attentive to detail and she made both of us and our young daughter feel at home. Their wine selection was very nice and Audrey picked out a great chardonnay for us.

We definitely recommend this Inn for anyone looking to get away and relax. We especially liked the quiet and cozy nature of the inn and the community of Guysborough.
