“Broad View of the Village Inn”

I first stayed at the Village Inn more than 20 years ago, when it was, as far as I know, the only game in town. I very much enjpyed my first visit, during which I stayed in what Mr. Beamish calls the "Bridal Suite". I had a nocturnal visit that was memorable. Years on, I went with my family - two beds, bathroom across the hall. It was cosy and fun, and the same room assigned to us on our most recent visit. A few years later, in company with my mother and sister, we got the "Guest House". Not a fun experience, on the whole. Mrs. Beamish is a master actress with facial expressions and body language that conjure images of Sybil Fawltey! The Village Inn is potentially the best property by far in the town. The Beamishes have grown somewhat smug over the years but I still find them, at their best, to be quite engaging and charming hosts. The dining room staff are fantastic and very accomodating. Forget the whale stuff! Get Mrs Beamish chatting about the town and preserves she sells at the front counter and his nibs on the accordion late at night, and you'll have a fantastic stay. With their guard down, the Beamishes are a fantastic couple.

  • Liked — Character of room/Inn and dining room staff.
  • Disliked — Cavalier attitude relative to other accomodation in town.

“Never stay there again”

When we were checking out availability in advance for the Village Inn, we were told that the guest house next door would be available. So we did booked it. When we arrived there we figured out that the guest house is more or less like youth hostel, pretty much run down, dirty with one bathroom for four rooms. Fortunately, we got the whole guest house for us, so we didn't need to share the bathroom - we had actually booked with en-suite bathroom! Nice to have a whole house, but all we wanted is clean room with bathroom.
The price for one night was 100$ and this excluded (!) breakfast. Pretty funny if you book a B&B and have to pay extra for B&B.
We stayed two weeks in Newfoundland, one of our best vacations we ever had, but those two nights in Village Inn were the worst. The place isn't worth the money you pay, even not half of it, you can get far better places.

“Eccentric Innkeeper”

I stayed at The Village Inn in June 2004. I saw the other reviews here and thought I'd share my experince as well.

Peter Bemish, the owner and Innkeeper, is, shall we say, "an original." I found him pretty strong medicine, in an agressivley self-aggrandizing way. Immediately after checking in he followed me (OK nearly chased me!) around the Inn rapid-firing questions at me to test my knowledge of whales (mainly). He claims to be the founder of some important research institute - and to have discovered incredible little known facts about whale communication etc. And, maybe he has.

But it was all too much too soon for my taste. I finally told him I didn't enjoy his "20 Questions" game and to please take his foot off the gas for a little while. He pouted, but more or less left me alone after that.

The next morning, after much deliberation, we did go with him and several other guests aboard his Zodiac-style boat for a whale watch cruise. The coast was extremely beautiful and we did see an old bull sperm whale, which, according to Peter, was quite unusual. The cruise was a good experience - the engines make enough noise that Peter can't really talk that much, and you can't hear him even if he does!. I will post some pic's of the coast to give you an idea of how beautiful it is....

Frankly, it dosen't come as much of a surprise to hear the previous reviewer's complaints about the reservation mix up and the cavalier attitude the owner took with them. For what it's worth, we found the rooms at The Inn to be perfectly adequate, and the food in the diningroom was as well - but nothing special. However, we definitely would not stay at The Village Inn again, as there are numerous other very good options for both rooms and dining available in town. Just check out the reviews here to see for yourself. Trinity is a *beautiful* little village (and area) and definitely worth even a large detour to spend some time there.

“Would not recommend”

I had a reservation for two nights. I arrived early only to find they had given my room to another family!!@ I was not happy to say the least. The hosts had found me another room with a neighbouring family. It was clean but not the same star rating as the Inn. The T.V. blared late into the night..and my room was directly above. Needless, I got little to no sleep that night, not to mention the bother of having to pack up and move twice. The owners of the Inn did nothing to compensate me for my troubles. I was very disappointed and would not recommend the Inn while staying in Trinity. I spent over 14 days in Newfoundland the summer of 2002 and everywhere else I stayed I had wonderful experiences.
