“Not a bad stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2009

Our room (5) was a good size, and was clean although the wall paper to the ceiling was starting to lift at the seams, the bathroom was a bit of a let down the shower was very tempermental and my husband come close to scalding himself and there was a large amount of black mould to the grout and the walls that was unattractive. The hotel is set in nice surroundings and was very peaceful during our visit (the bar a little too peaceful) staff were helpful and friendly and the breakfast was very good with a good choice.

“Very nice hotel in picturesque setting”

Went for a long weekend (Sunday - Tuesday), when i phoned to book the member of staff was very helpful. We had a superior room (7) on the upper floor which was nicely furnished and had a great view of the deer park. The staff were helpful if a little under prepared, I had to explain how to make a bloody mary. The food was good quality and in my opinion reasonably priced (we took advantage of a special offer) we had 3 courses from the set menu with a free glass of house wine for £17.50. The location was good for exploring North Norfolk and is about 10 minutes from Cromer a typical british seaside town (I do not mean in a negative way), we went to the beach at Salthouse on bank holiday Monday and it was empty - abosulutely stunning. Also visited Felbrigg House a National Trust property which was an enjoable couple of hours. Overall a very enjoable break.

“No cutting corners”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2009

Details in the presentation of this small country house hotel seem more appropriate to a higher price range. In particular, the table linens are of the highest standard,as are the bedding and towels.Low energy light bulbs have not yet cast a gloom over the public rooms or bedrooms, with the added benefit of no RF pollution to prevent Radio 4 being heard on longwave. The waiting staff are numerous, properly dressed and efficient. They serve real breakfasts,HOT,on HOT plates, to order,at lightning speed
By the greatest of mental effort,I can only recall a few points of criticism. Our room(4) had a rather low maximum temperature of the shower-it had a very modern type of mixer tap which probably is subject to some EEC safety regulation in this respect.Although we had the benefit of two windows on opposite walls for ventilation, one could not be used because of the insect population in the surrounding climbing plants(American readers should bote that window screening is almost unknown in the UK).They are cast iron frames, and part of the Listed features of the building-they cannot legally be replaced.
One meal was served with a different type of potato to that listed in the menu.
Those are ALL my criticisms. This is a proper hotel.

“Charming and quaint but some serious disappointments in food and room.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2009

It is charming hotel in a unique location. It is spotlessly clean, cosy, comfortable and with some quaint historical touches. The restaurant is attractive, tables laid up immacuately. We found the many part time staff all very effiicient, smiling and anxious to please.

However, the overall quality of the food did not come up to the standards of two AA rosettes - barely to one rosette. There was a lack of fresh vegetables.

One main course was abysmal: "Fillet Steak with a watercress salad, a Diane sauce and rough cut chips" The steak was thin, about 5 , cms. It was very well done when 'medium' had been asked for There was a handful of green leaves which might have come from a bagged supermarket salad and no watercress at all; the chips were 'a dente' yet very hot and looked twice cooked; and the Diane sauce was a button mushroom sauce not a "Diane" . The plate was swimming in this coating the salad.

We complained gently. We were told we would not be charged for two soft drinks. A derisory compensation for an only partly edible £20 x 2 = £40 main course.

Our second comlaint was the shower in Room 2. The water temperature can turn from tepid to scalding in and instant of vice versa. Dangerous and very discomforting.

These two things spoilt what other wise might have been a pleasant and very relaxing holiday

“Valentine's surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2009

We have just spent the weekend here - 4 mature friends! (& by the way, to the previous reviewer who doubted there was a Room 12, we also stayed in this!) & it was superb, overlooking the Deer Park. Staff were excellent, top marks to Jo for running around all weekend..proprietor very friendly & recommended some walks from the hotel, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Our friends had visited this hotel last year & really liked it. Part of our reason for going was to do a bit of research (my partner's name is Elderton). Valentine's dinner was lovely. I had 2 of the best nights sleep I have had in ages, & loved waking up to birdsong.
All in all, a very relaxing weekend & we would not hesitate in returning. I would just say, there is nowhere to stroll to after dinner & I think, just as a couple, we would have found it a bit too quiet in the dark evenings. Other than that, lovely.
