Just back from two glorious weeks in sunny Sunny Beach, flying to and from Bourgas. The Amphibia is a big hotel with a fantastic pool area, that never seemed to be busy! No slides but loads of room to play ball games in the water or laze on inflatables (bought cheaply at the little shop next door!). A great pool bar offered a range of drinks and snacks, at 3 levs (about £1.50) for TWO pints we weren't complaining!
Watch out when booking that you have a room with air conditioning, not many of them do, and sleeping in temperatures not lower than 28'c is not comfortable!
The DEFINITE MUST VISIT is THE GRILL BAR in the hotel grounds. Never doubt the warmest welcome from NASKO and crew, the food was the best we ate (and we tried lots of different places). The most we paid for starters, main meal, and drinks for a family of 4 was 70 lev (about £35)! And no-one outside hassling you to come in!
Not so, of MEMORY restaurant, across the road. Food was ok but comes at all different times, and in the wrong order. The staff were great with locals but weren't bothered that I never actually got my main!
Avoid Sunny Beach Centre unless you enjoy very busy streets lined with neon lights, fairground rides, dance music and hasslers.
NESSEBAR is another definite visit. Beautiful old town and fishing port. Great seafood restaurants but a bit more expensive. SOZOPOL is a smaller version, lovely!
Hiring a car is not too badly priced, great for seeing the less busy beaches, OBZOR and BYALA are worth having a day at. The mountain roads from SLIVEN offered amazing scenery and views but be aware of pot-holes, you won't just lose a wheel it'll be the whole car!
Waterparks; Aquapark Nessebar and Action Aquapark Sunny Beach, both had similar slides but the layout and grounds at Nessebar were much nicer. Set in a castle theme with proper stone steps, no metal stairs to stand and queue on. Both offered 20% discount on second visit.
A definite recommendation as a holiday destination. Would like to fly to Sophia next time and do the other side.
