First, just getting to the Comfort Suites in Bismarck is a chore. The "road" it's located on is more of a gravel/pavement mix that looks like a road from a bombed-out third-world country. After trying to keep my car on a winding path of decent pavement, I found that the hotel is under construction, which would not be a problem if the construction crew picked up after themselves; construction debris littered the parking lot.
When I checked in I was treated not as a customer or guest, but as an interruption to the staff's texting and internet surfing. No welcome, mention of what time the pool was open, when breakfast was served. I was just given a piece of paper to sign and a room key.
The room was was worn and had limited lighting (only lamps that had to be individually turned on). It had a reclining chair that looked like it belonged in a nursing home. Nasty. The beds were great, and everything appeared clean, but worn.
When I went to the pool, I found that no clean towels were set out, so naturally I asked for some at the front desk. The front desk did not have any, and did not know when they would, saying they might have some in a while. No apology. Very lacking customer service; the staff treated me as if I was a major annoyance. I was polite, and simply asked for a obvious amenity. A Super 8 can at least handle a pool towel properly.
The pool area was clean, and the pool was warm. The slide appeared to be a hit with kids.
The breakfast was fine; no problems. The breakfast area staff was not inviting, but at least not rude.
What really ruined this hotel for me occurred when I was getting ready to checkout. I returned to my room to find the door propped open with no staff around. Yes, my room was wide open with my belongings still inside and no staff around. After I walked into my open room, a maid came in from down the hall getting ready to throw my belongings outside of the room. She asked me if I had checked out, and I said no, and I have until Noon, the check-out time! The maid said, "oh," looking as dumbfounded as I was. I was not given the option for her to leave my room, she forced me out of my room before the checkout time! Why post a Noon checkout time if you're not going to honor it?
I still cannot believe that my room was left wide open and unattended with my belongings still in it, before the posted check-out time. This is unacceptable.
Upon checkout, I was not asked how my stay was. At least the staff is honest; they don't care how you stay was! Every staff member I spoke to treated me as if I was an annoyance.
I have come not to expect much from any hospitality business in North Dakota, but this hotel set a new low. The staff just doesn't care. I've stayed at Comfort Suites in other cities, and have never had any problems.
The only reason I stayed here was that the La Quinta was full for my first night in Bismarck. I moved to the La Quinta for the rest of my time in Bismarck. The La Quinta blew this dump away, and for only $10 more a night. The Comfort Suites in Bismarck is on the level of a Motel 6, not a Comfort Suites. I do not recommend this hotel. The La Quinta is far superior, and I'm sure other hotels in the area are better, too. The staff at this hotel is rude, and does not care about their customers.
