“Sticky Carpet”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2009

A friend of mine was going to be in NC for a few days and since we had not seen each other in a while, I drove up to meet him. We wanted to be in the same hotel and since he had already booked a room, I followed suit. What a mistake. After seeing the room, I offered to pay the difference for both of us to stay somewhere else. The room looked old and tired and was in bad need of updates, wallpaper stained, carpet by the bed was so saturated with filth that it was sticky. The AC unit did not have a thermostat or at least one that worked, the only options were cold and off. It was a pain in the behind to get up in the middle of the night to continually adjust the AC. The bathtub had perma-stains and the vanity area was covered with burns. While the room had an iron, there was no ironing board and where the flys kept coming from I will never know and probably do not want to know. The best part of the room was the first night when I got up to adjust the AC for the first time and my foot stuck to the carpet. Never again!

“A Hole of the most Putrid Description”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2008

A wretched, wretched place to stay. You may as well commit a crime and get yourself thrown in jail overnight, as you will experience better accommodations than at the Travelodge Salisbury. After being assigned an already-occupied room (in a nearly empty hotel), we were dismayed to discover that our new room, while free of other guests, was home to an astounding variety of filth. Some of the vile "amenities" included: black mold and scummy tile in the bathroom, sticky, grubby carpet in the bedroom, and dead flies in the drawers. Perhaps it is merciful that the florescent vanity light takes 25 minutes to fully turn on, as it does less to highlight the rust stains on the counter.
We had no other option for that night, but checked out immediately the next morning, despite having two-night reservation. When we asked for a refund of the second pre-paid night, the owner claimed that Expedia would have to issue the refund. Expedia denies this, so now we have to hassle with the owner for the return of our $56.
For the second night, we transfered to the Hampton Inn, two blocks away. An IMMENSE improvement.

“Not as bad as it looks”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2008

A friend and I stayed at the Travelodge in Salisbury March 1-2, 2008. Since we could not find a single room in the entire city of Salisbury, our last resort was to stay in one of the rooms at the Travelodge. The woman at the front desk was very friendly and the lobby is somewhat decent looking. We were given a king bed non-smoking room (212). The room was decent.. there were no immediate unsightly things anywhere and the bathroom was clean (the shower was a bit grungy). The sheets felt clean and smelled like detergent (always a good sign!).

Complaints:
The hotel is very loud (rooms are outside)
There was a man smoking in the mens room in the hotel lobby
The continental breakfast is nothing to get excited about

“Not up to Travelodge standards yet!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2008

Most of the hotels in Salisbury have changed names a couple times over the last five years. Unbeknownst to us at the time of booking, this Travelodge was a former Ramada Inn that had gone down and out. In fact, earlier in the day we arrived there had been an auction to sell off some of the old Ramada furnishings -- except for what was left in our room and the castoff mattresses at the back of the property and miscellaneous next to what looked like an outdoor pool area. (And, some of the Ramada Inn soap was supplied in our room for the second night. I guess soap doesn't spoil, but… is this the impression you want to give customers?)

NOTE TO HOTEL OWNERS: BE HONEST AND UP FRONT! If the property is undergoing renovations, please state that up front, on the web site, on the phone, etc. Nothing ticks me off more than arriving at a hotel to find it is under construction and it's too late to back out of reservations or find another hotel.

Sad to say this property was NOT up to Travelodge standards yet. Or should I say I hope our room was still scheduled to be redone; I'd hate to think our room was the finished product. Our room was worse than a bad Motel 6. First off the exterior door had no insulation molding and the gap was wide enough to stick my finger through--not the best with daytime temps at 30 degrees and nighttime temps in the teens. Not to mention I was concerned how well the door latched since the bolt seemed to barely reach the frame. So, there wasn't any insulation to block out the adjacent highway noise either.

And the floors are so thin we heard the people above us walking the floor. We couldn't remember the last hotel we were in that you could hear foosteps from the second floor rooms. After hearing constant walking across the room for 45 minutes, we called the front desk, which was responsive (a positive). They said they'd have a manager go to the room. We thought we might have trouble as the cars coming and going (not staying) seemed a bit much and seedy. At 3 am we heard the footsteps again and then a baby's cry so we figured the poor couple had a colicky baby and were forced into pacing the room to quiet the baby's cries. Still, we shouldn't have been able to hear either the baby nor the footsteps!

The bedspread had a palm-sized hole in the top exposing the batting. The room apparently had not been cleaned after what looked like maintenance on the toilet--splatters were on the bathroom door and the ice bucket had greasy fingerprints in it. The carpet floor probably had not been steam cleaned in the longest while and we know for sure it had not been vacuumed as we found a candy cane just under the bed (thank goodness we found it before our dog did!).

This property does allow pets, which is why I booked it in the first place. However, there is no area to walk a dog. There's a one-foot wide area that runs between the hotel and the next property but it's pretty much taken over by shrubs and garbage. So, we had to find grassy areas nearby (banks, college, parks) to walk the dog.

I thought the room should have had at least a fridge, if not a microwave and fridge, but alas our room had neither. I did see an employee moving a micro and fridge from one room to another. However, I did not ask about them for our room having not succeeded in my attempts at other hotels. (I'm tired of hotels promising amenities then finding out onsite that those amenities are only available in a few rooms!)

The office and breakfast area had been redone very nicely and looked fresh, new and clean. The breakfast consisted of juice, milk, make-your-own waffles with fruit topping, bagels and donuts. We did not eat the breakfast as we chose to eat out with family instead.

As for pricing, when I called the hotel directly I was quoted $59.95 per night. At the same time, the online price was $57.95. A couple days later the online price was $50.36 so I booked online at that price. However, when we arrived and were handed the charge slip, I quickly did the math to realize the price was raised. When I questioned it, I was told I was being charged $59.95 per night. Luckily, I went back to the car to retrieve my paperwork that I printed from my online booking to show the correct price. So, upon checkout the price was corrected.

However, this the third time for booking online (via Super8 and Travelodge) that the online price was initially "overlooked" and we were charged the regular rack rate. But you wouldn't know it because they don't show you the per night price and tax, only the total amount on the charge receipt. SO CHECK THOSE CHARGES CAREFULLY! Anyway, even at $50.36 per night, our room seemed at least $10 per night too much.

“stay away! rip off!”

i booked a room here for two nites only to cancel the day of checkin. originally booked thru ramada website ,it stated cancel up to 3 pm day of checkin, was told by rude girl at motel, their policy was 48 hours before checkin, and they were going to charge me 121.00!!! for first nite!got into big argument, was told flatly that I WAS GOING TO BE CHARGED! despite what ramadas cancellation policy was! then i found out they are no longer a ramada property! ive stayed there before. the rooms are barely worth 50.00 a nite which is what i payed in the past ,but they doubled the rates because it was a motorcycle rally weekend {a chance to gouge}. tried to stop payment ,couldnt.tried to contact them over policy dispute was told by another person i was not going to get my money back. if this is the way they do business i hope they close soon! i feel like I've been robbed! you've been warned!
