Most of the hotels in Salisbury have changed names a couple times over the last five years. Unbeknownst to us at the time of booking, this Travelodge was a former Ramada Inn that had gone down and out. In fact, earlier in the day we arrived there had been an auction to sell off some of the old Ramada furnishings -- except for what was left in our room and the castoff mattresses at the back of the property and miscellaneous next to what looked like an outdoor pool area. (And, some of the Ramada Inn soap was supplied in our room for the second night. I guess soap doesn't spoil, but… is this the impression you want to give customers?)
NOTE TO HOTEL OWNERS: BE HONEST AND UP FRONT! If the property is undergoing renovations, please state that up front, on the web site, on the phone, etc. Nothing ticks me off more than arriving at a hotel to find it is under construction and it's too late to back out of reservations or find another hotel.
Sad to say this property was NOT up to Travelodge standards yet. Or should I say I hope our room was still scheduled to be redone; I'd hate to think our room was the finished product. Our room was worse than a bad Motel 6. First off the exterior door had no insulation molding and the gap was wide enough to stick my finger through--not the best with daytime temps at 30 degrees and nighttime temps in the teens. Not to mention I was concerned how well the door latched since the bolt seemed to barely reach the frame. So, there wasn't any insulation to block out the adjacent highway noise either.
And the floors are so thin we heard the people above us walking the floor. We couldn't remember the last hotel we were in that you could hear foosteps from the second floor rooms. After hearing constant walking across the room for 45 minutes, we called the front desk, which was responsive (a positive). They said they'd have a manager go to the room. We thought we might have trouble as the cars coming and going (not staying) seemed a bit much and seedy. At 3 am we heard the footsteps again and then a baby's cry so we figured the poor couple had a colicky baby and were forced into pacing the room to quiet the baby's cries. Still, we shouldn't have been able to hear either the baby nor the footsteps!
The bedspread had a palm-sized hole in the top exposing the batting. The room apparently had not been cleaned after what looked like maintenance on the toilet--splatters were on the bathroom door and the ice bucket had greasy fingerprints in it. The carpet floor probably had not been steam cleaned in the longest while and we know for sure it had not been vacuumed as we found a candy cane just under the bed (thank goodness we found it before our dog did!).
This property does allow pets, which is why I booked it in the first place. However, there is no area to walk a dog. There's a one-foot wide area that runs between the hotel and the next property but it's pretty much taken over by shrubs and garbage. So, we had to find grassy areas nearby (banks, college, parks) to walk the dog.
I thought the room should have had at least a fridge, if not a microwave and fridge, but alas our room had neither. I did see an employee moving a micro and fridge from one room to another. However, I did not ask about them for our room having not succeeded in my attempts at other hotels. (I'm tired of hotels promising amenities then finding out onsite that those amenities are only available in a few rooms!)
The office and breakfast area had been redone very nicely and looked fresh, new and clean. The breakfast consisted of juice, milk, make-your-own waffles with fruit topping, bagels and donuts. We did not eat the breakfast as we chose to eat out with family instead.
As for pricing, when I called the hotel directly I was quoted $59.95 per night. At the same time, the online price was $57.95. A couple days later the online price was $50.36 so I booked online at that price. However, when we arrived and were handed the charge slip, I quickly did the math to realize the price was raised. When I questioned it, I was told I was being charged $59.95 per night. Luckily, I went back to the car to retrieve my paperwork that I printed from my online booking to show the correct price. So, upon checkout the price was corrected.
However, this the third time for booking online (via Super8 and Travelodge) that the online price was initially "overlooked" and we were charged the regular rack rate. But you wouldn't know it because they don't show you the per night price and tax, only the total amount on the charge receipt. SO CHECK THOSE CHARGES CAREFULLY! Anyway, even at $50.36 per night, our room seemed at least $10 per night too much.
