When we first arrived at the farm, we were told to go take a nap and leave the kids to roam around by themselves. "It's safe!" John and Lorna assured us. I was reluctant as I imagined my 3 yr old climbing over the horse stable gate cos he loved feeding it so much, or the 5 yr old klutz falling over pots and nails in the shed. Not to mention them terrorizing the numerous baby animals and getting at...tacked by defensive mummy animals (think boxing kangaroos), or destroying Lorna's lovely herb garden. But out of sheer exhaustion, I gave up hovering as they ran around the farm playing or fighting over their favorite animals. The worst so far has been when they come back, sometimes bare feet, with animal poo or other queer substances which I dare not guess. I only know that the fact that they're back meant that they are tired and hungry for dinner. So I just hurry them into the bathroom, spray them with a vengeance and scrub them clean before settling down to a very enjoyable dinner because they're ravenous and make no fuss.
Being at the farm has so far triumphed over Surfer's paradise and SeaWorld. Can feel a sigh of relief to get back to the mountains and the plains and the beloved animals who greet us eagerly (peacock honks loudly and dog wags vigorously) when our car turns in the driveway. Door opens and the kids are off disappearing into the animal compounds. They sometimes roam back to shoot baskets, dribble balls or throw frisbees with the adults. Certainly not the place to over parent haha!
