“The Sound of Music-USA Appalachian Syle”

Our first trip to Max Patch Bald was around 1985 for a Mother's Day picnic. We felt as if transported to Austria or the Scottish/Irish highlands-USA version with views taking in the Cumberland Mtns. of Tennessee, all the way to Mt LeConte in the Great Smokies, Cold Mountain along the Blueridge Parkway to Mt. Mitchell-highest mountain east of the Mississippi River. It became an annual habit. Best times for going? Depends on your constitution, because it is special every time-whether Spring or Summer wildflowers, wild blueberries and blackberries, Autumn leaves, or Winter snowshoeing. Windy for kites or sunny and still for enjoying friends and a picnic, we love this ethereal place emanating a constant flow of positive energy. Native Cherokee and ancient Woodland tribes left evidence of hunting camps dating back over 5000 years. Bald mountains like this were grazed by migrating herds of elk and bison, then later by cattle. Today, the Forest service keeps it in meadows by periodic burning and haying by local farmers.

From the USFS parking lot, PLEASE take the grassy graded trail wrapping around to the left and NOT the one that goes straight up (causing erosion). You won't save any time, and it is much steeper! The loop trail all the way around is about 1.5 miles-but an easy walk.

Take a kite, a picnic lunch, some sunscreen and good friends and family to spend most of the day. ALso, a USFS trout pond is nearby-for a cooling dip or dropping a line if you have the right license. You gotta see/experience it to believe it.!

We spent a week at a cabin about 1 mile from Max Patch Bald. Hiking to the top of the bald was fun (although tiring), and the 360 degree views at the top were spectacular. The road to the bald is unpaved, but hard packed and not difficult to drive in good weather - don't give up as you travel along the road - you will reach your destination! Pack a lunch and hike to the top - it's worth the trip.

We hired Smoky Mtn Llama Treks who offer gorgeous pack llamas to hike with you and carry all our food and stuff! They were friendly, easy to lead and it made our trip so fun! The views were incredible, and the flowers and deer made it seem like we were walking through a calender photo. Its well worth the drive from anywhere!

“Awesome view of the southern Appalachians”

The short hike from the parking area to the top of Max Patch is so worth the reward of the incredible 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. You can even take a short hike on the Appalachian Trail if you like. No trees so be careful in the heat of the summer, but early morning sunrises or evening sunsets can be awesome, even spiritual, especially if nobody else is around. If you love the mountains and don't mind a little exercise, I highly recommend a visit to Max Patch.

“Taffic Delay warning”

We took a day trip to Max Patch only hearing about it through the trip advisor recommendation printed here. The directions to Max Patch were pretty good and the magnificent panoramic 360 degree view of Max Patch can't be described only experienced. A couple things to know before hand. There are NO BATHROOMS and No DRINKING FOUNTAINS. The hike to the "Summit" is grass covered and gradual and should be done to get the best views. For the return trip home we decided to take the "shorter" more direct route given on trip advisor. It should be explained to those not from the area that you start out in asheville with the directions given and upon taking the shorter return version to I-40 you end up at exit # 7 which is closer to Tennesee and the Smokies approx. 40 miles from Asheville. So we had to head back to Asheville on I-40 East and there was a 30 MINUTE TRAFFIC DELAY due to lane closures so I'm not so sure it was any shorter. Knowing this we would've made different accomodations for the night so I think it's very important to print for those unfamiliar with the area.
