Hands down, Helene and Rick Siegel’s 4 ½ Street Inn is the place to stay while taking in the beauty of the Highlands, NC area. My wife, Becky, and I love it so much that we have stayed there three times over the last four months. Their whole presentation is right up our collective alleys from the old time, down home atmosphere that kicks you in the gut as soon as you walk in… to the uptown gourmet breakfast blitz created by master chef Helene, served up in a dining room that harkens back to a roadside inn eatery from the 1880’s or a beatnik coffee shop in the fifties. Either way it’s down in the groove.
On each visit we have stayed on a different floor of the three story B & B and each time has been exceptional. During the last visit we chose the first floor Bird Room, just down from the dining area, which features a stately fireplace. Perfect spot for me to stand of the evening, supping my adult beverage as the wafting flames of a quaint fire reminded me of days gone by in a mystical place called Nestletown. This room also opens directly to the inn’s wrap-around porch and the tranquil backyard beyond.
Each night at 5:30 sharp our hosts, assisted by Jake the hospitality dog, serve wine and hors d’ouvres in their library, making for a fine happy hour and a half before we dash off to indulge in the great dining choices Highlands has to offer. It is during that time we get to meet fellow travelers with an appreciation for authentic down hominess and also, if the winds are blowing in the right direction, the pleasure of listening in on Rick’s wit and wisdom. A treat it is for those fortunate enough to catch Rick when he is “on”…everything from sports to music to politics, all done in his entertaining way. Oh and there’s a fine Taylor guitar setting in the corner if you feel like picking a little during your stay.
Bottom line is that when that mournful morn comes for us to pack up and head back to Reality City it is done with a certain amount of sadness akin to saying goodbye to family members that you “really” like that live in a great place. A place you will want to return to again and again. Out of 5 stars I would give it a 6.
