I picked this Microtel for two reasons. First, I have stayed at Microtels before while travelling and always found them to be clean and reasonably priced. Secondly, this Microtel is very close to the Ikea in Charlotte (the reason behind my trip). This was my impression in the first 10 minutes of my stay. The front door was propped open by an overflowing cigarette butt can. The lady at the front desk was not sure whether the elevator was working and told me to go check it. When I got to my floor, the smoke-free hallway smelled of smoke, and my room had not yet been cleaned, the bed was not made and food trays were on the table. After carrying my luggage back downstairs, the woman at the front desk proceeded to explain all the reasons why the room had not yet been cleaned, instead of simply apologizing and assigning me a new room. She did eventually did assign me another room and asked me to check to see if this one had been cleaned. Fortunately for all concerned, this one had been cleaned but the room had a musty smell. When I turned on the Heating/AC unit, it sounded like water was running and the unit turned itself on and off repeatedly. I called the front desk and was informed they were "working on that" and that I should not be worried about water flooding my room. Water flooding my room? I just wanted a room with a functional HVAC unit. I was hungry and decided to live with this and just go get some dinner. That was a mistake, the unit kept me up most of the night. In the morning I went downstairs for my complimentary breakfast. In contrast with the eating areas I had seen in other Microtels, this one was little more than a closet. It was terribly crowded while trying to prepare the breakfast and there was NO place to sit and eat. I guess we were supposed to take it back to our rooms? Due to the crowd, I got some juice and left to get my breakfast at McDonald's. The bottom line? DON'T STAY HERE.
