I took my husband to the High Hampton Inn this past Saturday to celebrate his birthday. I knew going into it what to expect and wasn’t really surprised by anything but I certainly felt like there was room for improvement especially considering that for the price we could have stayed Club Level at The Ritz Carlton. But again, I had read the reviews and the web site and was under no false impression of what to expect. Clearly here you pay for the scenery.
Upon arriving around 12:30 pm we were pleasantly surprised to find our room was ready despite the fact that check-in wasn’t until 3pm. The staff was very friendly and a nice gentleman delivered our bags to our room promptly after check in. We stayed in room 50 of the Lake Cottage; the room had a fireplace and a porch along with two queen beds. The room was not horrible but a few tweaks would have improved the overall feel. These buildings are old and as a result the flooring in our room was extremely bowed on the edges of the room with a deep sink in the center. As a general rule this wouldn’t be a large issue for me but it made sleeping rather uncomfortable because both beds were leaning in and made us roll down to one side of the bed. The person on the high side of the bed was particularly moved to cling to the edge to stay put. Neither one of us got any sleep. A small thing which struck me was the plastic ice bucket in the room which was akin to what you see in a hospital room. It seemed to me like such a small thing for the inn to provide an insulated ice bucket. The bathrooms were old but clean and the room was fairly clean although the lamp shades had not been dusted in some time. Really the room felt very much like camp. The pictures on the web site make the rooms appear much nicer than the room we stayed in.
The grounds are simply beautiful and the hiking trails were very well kept. We hiked to the top of Chimney Top Mountain on Saturday and then the top of Rock Mountain on Sunday. After our hike on Saturday we returned and had tea in the inn by the fire, which was very nice after a cool hike. The Inn sitting area has a very pleasant atmosphere and the four sided fireplace is a nice place to sit and relax. It wasn’t long before we thought we would try out The Tavern. Initially we got our beverage and moved out onto the lawn to sit out in the beautiful grounds but as the sun began to set the chill pushed us back inside where we found our spot in two high backed chairs by a wood burning stove. There was a gentleman playing live music and my husband was very happy in his spot listening to the entertainment and enjoying the fire. The service in The Tavern was very good. Both bartenders were very friendly and efficient. When we returned after dinner there was a wedding party having a reception in The Tavern, which seemed to annoy some of the other guests but we found it to be fine. We just wanted to sit and relax and listen to the music so it really didn’t matter to us who were there.
One thing which I felt was truly sub par was the food; it really took away from and cheapened the experience. Breakfast was the only decent meal offered. We both really felt the food should be much better for what you pay to stay here. What is offered is very much cafeteria food at best. The servers in the restaurant however were very kind and helpful.
Overall we enjoyed our experience. The service was very good and everyone was very kind and helpful. Despite the poor quality of the food we would probably return if it were not for how uncomfortable the sleeping arrangements were. I suspect not all the rooms suffer from the same slanting floor but I would have a hard time gambling $700 on two possible sleepless nights.
