Ed and Wilma Benjamin lovingly maintain this beautiful, spacious inn, tastefully furnished with fine antiques and comfortable beds. Upon arrival, Wilma greets us with a tour of the facilities and stories about the unique history of the buildings on the premises. We are then given the keys to our room and vouchers which can be used toward breakfast or lunch at one of four participating restaurants nearby. We like the flexibility of this option, which takes the place of the on-site breakfast offered by some other B&Bs and gives us a chance to try out local fare.
The value of a stay at the Candlelight Lodge goes far beyond the fact that off-season rates are comparable to those of some standard motel rooms. Rates during high season are also very reasonable considering that these elegant, well-kept suites are spacious and have attractive amenities such as a full kitchen or living area in some, a separate entrance, or a romantic fireplace in others. My husband and I have stayed in four of the eight suites in the main lodge. Each has its own character and beauty and offers a private bath. Water pressure, something we’re finicky about, is great. Daily housekeeping is available.
Candlelight Lodge is located in Westfield, a charming town with a quaint Main Street reminiscent of another era. We like its proximity to SUNY Fredonia, which is a showcase for performing arts in the region and home to the Western New York Chamber Orchestra; Lake Erie attractions; art galleries; recreational activities on Lake Chautauqua and its cultural centerpiece, the Chautauqua Institute; wineries and expanses of lush grape vineyards dotting the local landscape; restaurants and great little casual eateries offering surprisingly delicious, hearty meals. Although the surrounding area appears very laid back and undeveloped, there are lots of interesting things to do.
We are eager return this summer as a stopover along our trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto. In the fall, we hope to nestle ourselves into a cozy fireplace suite during one of our regular visits to the area to see our son, a college student SUNY Fredonia. Candlelight Lodge is a great place to stay, any time of year.
