There are aspects of this hotel which are excellent and others which are sadly disappointing. The entrance promises great things. It is a 'town' location, but you are greeted with a pretty and country style garden. The entrance hall is impressive with a rather grand staircase. We arrived on the first plane from Newquay and had arranged with the hotel to check in and have breakfast, although we were advised that we would most probably not have access to our room. The greeting we received was rather lukewarm, and we were told to leave our bags in reception until our room was ready. We enquired as to when this would be, and the response was rather vague. However, we were on the Isles of Scilly which is renowned for it's relaxed
approach to life! We were a little surprised to find the bags still there when we returned from our day out at 5pm! Our room was ready, we were given the key and dutifully carried the bags upstairs!
The room was lovely with a balcony, although the bathroom was small and rather dated. It was, however, above reception, so we were woken promptly at 7.30 when presumably the
receptionist arrived. Hoovering would start shortly after.
The staff were nearly all not from the Isles of Scilliy and some from very far afield. They were
friendly but rather reserved, and seemed to know very little about the Isles of Scilly except when the local disco was happening. They were helpful but more in a reactive as opposed to proactive way.
The food was on the whole very good with flashes of very creative and imaginative offerings on the menu. There were always vegetarian options although lentil stew sounded rather
unappetising! The presentation of the menus-the summer menu was a plastic laminated sheet,
and the specials a plain photocopied sheet of white A4-was very poor. We were told that there had been a 'printing error' earlier in the year, and this had resulted in the menus being presented in this format as a 'temporary measure'. The hotel has lovely branding, which could have been used as a template on which to print the menus, and I am sure that temporary menu folders could have been purchased as an interim measure. The presentation of the menus predisposed one to the rather sterile bar and dining room, which both lacked
atmosphere. Given the comments made on other reviews regarding the toaster at breakfast, we rather liked this, although a faster toaster would have been preferable and the option of being offered marmite would have been appreciated.
Overall, this hotel has great potential but is let down by some fundamental aspects of it's offering. Rather expensive for what it is especially in comparison to the Star Castle.
