We were staying in a villa near Bucine and asked the housekeeper to recommend a special restaurant for my daughter's birthday. She booked Uvaspina. What a great choice. The decor is minimalist with interesting metal sculptures of fish on the wall. The chef, Francesca Lari, came out to explain some of the dishes (the menu is only in Italian - and why shouldn't it be) - e.g. the tuna starter is not made with tuna, hence the need for the explanations! The food is spectacular (try the farfalle with rabbit) - fresh ingredients handled slightly differently from the Italian norm and the presentation is excellent. Wine list is good with a wide range of prices. The birthday dessert for my daughter was also superb. The whole experience was so good that we returned for dinner the following week, where the experience was equally great.
We only travelled about 10-12km to the restaurant but if you are anywhere near Montevarchi, go and have a meal at Uvaspina. I doubt that you will be disappointed. The prices are a bit above the average osteria or trattoria in the area but well worth it - and when you are used to HK prices for vastly inferior food cooked by over-rated "chefs", I view it as almost a bargain. You may need directions from the website as I doubt that the average visitor would find it just wandering around.
