“Gorgeous place to visit”

This is really the only place to stay if you want to be close to the game drives and boat rides offered early morning so we had a friend make the booking for us which included all meals. That is necessary because it is remotely located. It had been raining for over a week when we arrived so the road to get there was extremely wet and rutted. We hired a driver with a Toyota Rav but it wasn't 4 wheel drive and we had some difficulties staying on the road. By the time we arrived, it started to clear up and the next day most roads were driveable again.

The first thing you notice, even before you arrive at the main gate to the park, is that there are plenty of animals to see- we saw elephants, kops, and waterbucks along the roadway. The park entrance was $30 each. You will see something no matter what the weather.

The lodge is considered luxury accomodation and although it's not new, it's comfortable. Don't worry about taking an antimalarial drug to stay here as they spray the rooms every night and there are mosquito nets surrounding the sleeping area. Even in the park we had no problem with mosquitoes. The staff was very helpful finding us tour guides and we signed up for the boat ride and game drive and had it charged to the room so there wasn't even a need for cash, except for tipping.

There were warthogs roaming the grounds and we heard a hippo taking an early morning pee outside our room. Mongoose will get into the trash cans. Birds are everywhere. Bats fly onto the patio at night so it was fun to watch them...from indoors. Water was hot and plentiful. Drinking water provided in the room had been boiled and treated. Bed was large and comfortable. No TV in the room, but there is TV in a lounge at the lodge...but really, who comes to such a place to watch TV? Bonfire at night right outside the lodge overlooking the lake. Can't really complain about anything!

The lodge serves all meals in the same room. Service was excellent as was the food. Many choices and everything was fresh. Gorgeous view of the lake from the dining area. You can sit outside but then the birds are somewhat bothersome. Overall a very memorable experience!

“Amazing views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2009

This place is amazing - we stayed in the very horrible and grotty hostel beside it the night before and had the worst night ever in Uganda so we decieded to spoil ourselves and upgrade! And it really was amazing - can't speak highly enough of it. Staff were really friendly and efficent , the food was excellent, rooms had amazing views and there was a great feel to the place with lovely little extra touches. Definatly stay there!! The safari was brilliant too!!

“Worst lodge on our trip, without character, poor service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2009

After a wonderful stay at Bwindi Lodge and Mihingo Lodge, we were transported to this awful time-warped 80s place. To be fair, the location is great, overlooking the Lake. But that's about it. The food in the restaurant is Westernized, badly cooked standard fare. The birds on the terrace take the bread from your desk and relieve themselves on your table (my drink was "replaced" by the unfriendly waiter by simply adding more juice to water down the bird poo). The rooms are small, dark, super old-fashioned and have an ugly and loud A/C in front of the door. You're not in the nature (like in most other lodges in Uganda), you're in an old motel-like environment which had it's best times several decades ago but still thinks of itself as the best place to be. Service was snobby and unfriendly, our request to have a morning coffee in our room was denied with the answer "that's too early for our waiter, you can come to the lobby". We informed our tour operator about our displeasure and the next day stayed in the absolutely amazing Jacana Lodge, which is only 10 minutes away - and even a lot cheaper! I would never come back here as staying here means you're paying a lot of money for a fake environment and miss out on all the great unique places you can stay in and really experience Ugandan hospitality and the spectacular nature of this country.

“Well-located and Well-run Safari Lodge”

Pretty much everyone who’s been to QENP is familiar with Mweya, since it occupies a fabulous location on a peninsula overlooking the Kazinga Channel and Lake Edward. Because it's so far from anything else, Mweya is a self-contained community, with guide and staff lodging, a petrol station, etc., and it's worth taking the time to stroll around the grounds. Everyone we met here, from the desk clerks to the servers to the maintenance people, was incredibly nice and solicitous.

While the rooms weren't slickly designed or recently updated, they were very nice. The bed was enormous (with walk-in mosquito netting!) and every room has a little porch facing the water. The main building of the lodge is quite attractive. The lobby has an enormous picture window looking out over the water, and there are many places to sit in peace on the porches that trace the outside of the building. Both the bar and the restaurant are appealing spaces, and they have indoor and outdoor seating options. There's also a pool (we and the staff were the only people who used it) and a little firepit, which was a great place to sit at night. One of our favorite evenings of our trip was warming ourselves by the fire while watching a thunderstorm roll across Lake Edward.

Unless you're a quadruped or willing to beg food from the fishermen on the lakes, Mweya is your only dining option for miles around. But even without competition, the food here is good. Although the menu tends toward a sort of innocuous internationalism, there were a few local and Indian dishes available, and we found these to be better than the alternatives.

But our favorite thing about Mweya was the animals! There was a huge group (20-30 members) of banded mongoose that roamed the grounds while we were there. They slept under a shade bush near our room and raced around the outside seating area (and even went into the dining room when someone left the door open). We also saw several warthogs running around--they chased a staff member (much to the amusement of his colleagues) and one snuck up behind us while we were sitting on the patio and proceeded to sniff and knock over our camera, which was resting on the ground.

Less cute but more impressive were the two adolescent lions who woke up everyone at Mweya at 330 in the morning by wandering through the grounds roaring. We watched one of them stand perhaps 10 feet from our room and roar and roar. It was simply thrilling.

“A well-oiled machine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2009

My wife and I enjoyed a 3-night stay in this lodge, which is such a well-oiled machine that it can almost be described as a tourist processor. Though it definitely lacks the intimacy and the wilderness feeling of a tented camp, this luxury-hotel-in-the-bush is exceptionally well located indeed. While the rooms are nothing to write home about, the food really is delicious – particularly the Indian dishes. When having breakfast or lunch al fresco, it’s a real delight to watch the birds that are all around – even trying to snatch some bits off your table. Except for the odd waiter who thinks only fancy dressed customers deserve to be treated with respect, the service is impeccable. But for such a hotel, it surprised us a bit the lodge didn’t have a license to change foreign currency (though it’s possible to pay your bills with a credit card). However, since we needed to change some Euros into Ugandan shillings before heading south to Ishasha and Bwindi, the manager-on-duty was so kind to help us and changed some Euros into the local currency out of his pocket. As far as we could understand it: while the hotel wasn’t licensed to change, breaking the law when they had done so, the manager did not since he was not an Ugandan national. Thank for this!
