“what an enjoyable place.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2009

i first visited uganda in nov/dec 2007 and as part of the trip we went to Mweya Safari Lodge... I travel a lot for work and leisure and have joined up to Trip Advisor to give honest and reliable reviews of places i have stayed...
This lodge is right in the Queen Elizabeth National Park... the staff were very friendly - great service.... we stayed for 2 nights on full board basis... all meals were excellent - buffet style one night and a la carte the next. Great variety at both. Breakfast was also very impressive with lots of choice to please the multi-national guests that stay at the lodge. the views from the terrace and pool area are breath taking.
I am going to to Uganda this year with other friends and a trip to Mweya is top of my list. Yes the rooms are not as luxurious as hotels in other parts of the world - but you are in Uganda - enjoy the area - enjoy the wildlife and enjoy the people !

“Great Location but I won't go back.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2009

This is a beautiful spot to see Queen Elizabeth National Park but I was disappointed with the lodge itself. The rooms are older and uncared for; our curtains didn't open without almost pulling them off the ceiling and the back door was virtually impossible to lock and unlock. After having stayed at the sister lodge Paraa at Murchison Falls last year, I was surprised with this lodge. The staff in th restaurant were very unfriendly and difficult to deal with. We were a group of 8 and it took a lot to finally convince the staff to put tables together for us to be able to eat as a group. I really got the impression that we were inconveniencing them when we asked for drinks or needed something at our table. The cooking staff at the buffet were terrific and friendly though. It was really the hosting and serving staff that were difficult.

“Location, Location, Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2009

Stayed for 3 nights at the beautiful lodge. Standard rooms are a sort of basic luxury - no a/c, tv, or fancy modern fittings, but if you're lucky enough to venture out of the park into the REAL Uganda you'll understand that this would be a near impossible feat!
However, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the place really comes into itself when you look at the view from almost anywhere in the complex - stunning! The pool and deck area can't be beaten for views, and although the pool isn't crystal clear it is obviously well looked after with comfortable sun loungers and the place never seemed busy or loud when we were there.
The food is decent with local dishes (matoke etc) included amoungst the majority of western chow. The service is top notch and the staff seem to rememebr who you are for your whole stay. The maids turn downt the bedrooms each night, prepping it for mosquito avoidance with curtain style nets and lots of spray.
TIP: Do the Kasinga river channel trip in the evening to see much more wildlife, and the early morning game drive with one of the hotel's vehicles for the best experience (they have stretch land cruisers with open tops as opposed to the cramped toyota mini-vans everyone else offfers.

“A Wonderful Introduction to Uganda”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2009

I stayed at Mweya Lodge for 3 nights in June this year. This was my first trip to Africa and indeed Uganda, and the first place I would stay during my trip. I thought the service was exceptional, very friendly and helpful staff. I thought the lodge itself was very charming and my room was large and full of character. Sitting on my bed I could actually see Buffalo and Elephants down at the waters edge of the Kazinga Channel, amazing. The service for dining was very good and I enjoyed the food. The birdlife around the lodge and in the park ( and I believe in the Queen Elizabeth National Park there is 613 species of birds found) was so diverse and very beautiful, I have lots of photos of bushes where a few seconds before there had been a beautiful bird !! Highlight was the roaming warthogs and the mongoose colony, was amazed to see big father warthog sitting regally with mongoose vigorously cleaning around the warthogs eyes with his mouth and eating ticks off him. The views are just so beautiful too. I thoroughly enjoyed myself at this lodge.

“Far too pricey! Go camping instead.”

I actually ended up staying at Mweya on accident. We went to the park and were planning to camp for the three nights we spent there. Another girl in the group decided to get a room for the night, thinking the cost would be worth the experience of staying in a safari lodge after spending a month living with locals. She asked for a single bed ($125USD), apparently there were none, so the desk staff took her to a room with two single beds. So we figured heck, someone else may as well stay in the room with her. The rooms were fine, nothing fancy and probably not worth the price. We went to check out in the early morning in a rush to get going, and the lady at the desk says there are outstanding fees. Apparently she needed to charge us for the double room even though there had been no singles left, that was only an extra $10 so we paid it. Then she decided that the fee would be much higher if two people had actually be sleeping in the room, instead of $135, it would be $220. We managed to get out of that one, so far. Some information on this would have been helpful for the staff to have informed us before giving out the room in the first place. We only experienced the room and a drink in the lounge area, so I can't comment on other amenities.
You are far better off to bring a (sturdy and waterproof!) tent and camp in a designated area for the night - it's a much better experience! Hyenas, hippos, waterback and warthogs (and maybe a lion or two) could decide to spend the night with you. Always worth the excitement. The park was excellent, we drove around without a guide for most of the time and saw elephants, lions, cape buffalo, hippos, vervet monkeys and even a rare leopard spotting all within 40 feet of the road.
