We went to Selous for a little over 24hours before heading to Zanzibar. We really did not expect very much since we had so little time, but we were very pleasantly surpirised....
Arranging transfer was surprisingly easy through the internet and there are several airlines which fly directly into the game reserves which is a very interesting experience. Selous is a very vast game reserve with various airstrips. Upon arrival at Stieglers airstrip with Coastal Aviation, Christopher, our guide was waiting for us with cold wet towels on a plate. That was an amazing treat after a hot and stuffy journey in our tiny plane and Christopher who stayed with us for the entire trip was really great with us. As Selous is a "bush" reserve, he always pointed out to us things to see that we would have missed.
The lodge itself is truly amazing... The rooms are built in stilts just above the river and the view is stunning. The rooms are very large, they have been built with excellent and expensive materials, and given the location of the lodge, it is amazing how this was accomplished. The outdoor plunge pool and shower is a definite treat also. During the evening you hear the sounds of the hippos and other animals.
Regarding the restaurant, the quality of the food and the service is totally 5-star. There was always a very good choice of food and beverages, and the staff was very polite and friendly.
Our 1-day safari included an afternoon river boat ride where we say elephants, hippopotamus, and crocodiles upon arrival. In the evening we stayed at the lodge and enjoyed some fantastic food and the exquisite room. Next day included breakfast, a half-day safari, where we say all sorts of animals such as elephants, giraffes, different sorts of bucks & antelopes, a family of lions, many zebras, baboons, birds, etc. We then returned to the lodge for lunch and a shower, and were then transferred to the airstrip for departure.
The time past very quickly and although we feel we saw a lot, we would have wanted to spend at least one more day there, in order to better enjoy the beautiful lodge.
We have not traveled before in Africa, so I cannot compare Selous with other better known reserves such as the Serengheti etc. We were told that southern Tanzania reserves are not so popular as the ones in the north close to Kenya. So there were not many jeeps around which from what I heard is not the case in other more "fashionable" reserves, which was very pleasant. We felt very safe with our private car and guide and all-in-all we were very satisfied with our journey and would recommend it to anyone.
