I booked this hotel through Travelocity only because there were no other hotels available in Watertown for the night I wanted to stay. First, the hotel website gave the impression it was a quality hotel - wrong, the pictures were probably taken years ago and are not representative of what we encountered. I had trouble finding the office because it wasn't even attached to the hotel building - tough to figure out especially at 10:30 pm. After checking in with my family, we entered the building (no lock) and were totally shocked with the filthiness of the carpets and walls. Our room was not any different, except for the strong smoky, musty stench. The fear and shock on my family's face said it all (my 10 year old son actually became ill). My reservation specified a non-smoking room and there was an ashtray on the table - a smoking room. I went to the bathroom only to meet up with the resident cockroach. I immediately drove back out to the office and complained to the owner about the smoking room and the cockroach. He alleged that Travelocity sent a fax to the EconoLodge's central booking centre where they would enter the specifications of the room to his establishment (He does not see the fax) and that Travelocity made the mistake in booking the smoking room. I asked to see where a non-smoking room would show up on his computer screen and he showed me a booking reference number . . . really? I explained about the cockroach and he asked how many. I insisted that when the lights are off for the night, there would be more. He wanted to spray my room and I refused to allow him to expose my 2 kids to harmful pesticides. Just then, a woman comes in asking about a reservation she had made with Travelocity and the owner pulls a fax from the fax machine and processes the request . . . really? I was told that was handled by EconoLodge's central booking centre? After a big debate, the owner "agreed" to cancel my reservation (note to self, need to verify my credit card statement). When I asked him to show me on the booking print out where the reservation stated a smoking room, he showed me "DD" and proceeded to explain that those initials meant "smoking room" - really? After that experience, we had no choice but to continue our drive in the middle of the night. BUT, the silver lining was that we did not lose sleep over fears of sleeping at the EconoLodge, Watertown.
