“great value for money hotel, perfect location”

We stopped over here for 6 nights on our way to stay with family in Sydney, it had to be on a beach, good value for money and be well recommended, this hotel ticked the boxes but with several poor trip advisor reviews we were wary.

we arrived about 10am, well before normal check in time, we were offered some breakfast and a room to change, good first impression after 2 flights and a 45min taxi ride!

Our room was on 2nd floor of a small block overlooking the pool and gardens (no 209) which was only 200 yards from reception/bar and 300 yards from the restaurant and beach. The rooms are very basic but clean, standard double bed, tv with about 10 channels, mostly french but a good movie channel and 'snowy' news channel, I asked staff to look at fixing it but was told they had poor satalite reception. shower was good size with separate toilet. Air con worked well but struggled after a while due to the high heat and humidity.

read so many complaints about the bland food and lack of choice but I believe we got exactly what we paid for, we booked all inclusive and ate all our meals in the main restaurant. The choice was OK, always fish, chicken and either beef or lamb plus veg, rice and lots of salad options, all the food was well presented and well cooked with different evening theme nights including chinese and BBQ. I can see a 2 week stay getting a bit boring but that would be the same anywhere. The staff did a brilliant job and helped make our stay enjoyable. I requested a special surprise dinner for my wifes birthday which the hotel was happy to organise, I met the chef and agreed a menu (4 courses with grilled lobster at an extra cost) and a spot outside on the beach, they did a brilliant job and made such an effort to make it special for us both.

Lots of reviews mentioned the superb cocktails mixed by Monty the barman, they really are that good and Monty is a real character. The hotel had entertainment on a couple of nights, it suited us to stay in the in but if you want some lively nightlife you will need to get a taxi into Flaq or further.

The beach was great, very clean white sand and a choice of sun louges with towels provided. take some 'jelly' shoes as the sand off the beach is coral and will hurt your feet getting in and out of the water which is clean, clear and very warm.

You only get what you pay for and here we got that and more, it is a 3 star and delivers everything it promises but it could do with a makeover and a little money spending on it but then I guess it would charge more....would we go again? absolutely!

“A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

We recently had a 10 day stay in this delightful hotel. The staff were very polite and friendly, the room was more than adequate and cleaned daily. We even had a mosquito machine with a new tablet left in the room every day. The food was plentiful if a little bland but sauces and spices were served in dishes. You did have to ask for certain things such as tomatoes but the chef was happy to provide whatever you asked for. The drinks were restricted for all inclusive but the barman (Monty) was very helpful and makes a mean pina colada. There is always room for improvement wherever you go but some people expect too much from a 3 star hotel. If you want live entertainment every night this is not the hotel for you. Wonderful beach, get the bus into Flacq and visit the market to take in the culture. Be warned trips are VERY expensive but worth it.

“Hotel helped us to enjoy a return to Mauritius”

Struck by the friendliness and helpfullness of all the staff. It was nice to be greeted personally by the manager and by a receptionist after a 25 hour journey from home. It seems to be hotel's standard practice. Our comfortable and good sized room was closest of all to the beach - and to the restaurant! Room kept spotlessly clean and tidy for us. The policy of this hotel (as with others) to be all inclusive including the bar is a big help. Monty and Raju at the bar, the reception staff, waiting staff, housekeeping and many others all very quick to attend to our needs. Full marks to them. A quiet and cosy hotel, not too large at 50 rooms.

One disappointment was the restaurant - breakfast very good, dinner on the whole was reasonable with a variety of hot and cold themed buffets daily over the two weeks we were there ,but the lunch was lacking in variety. The practice of serving afternoon tea or coffee at the bar is very 'British' and welcome. Monty's cocktails to be recommended and remember it's all in the price. Whilst some improvements to menus could be justified, I think a few of other reviews have been a bit unfair in their restaurant criticism - it is after all a 3 star hotel not a super de luxe 5 star plus.

Facilities for the clean sandy beach and the pool were good. Plenty of beach towels and more than enough sun beds on the beach. A small private beach from which miles of walking possible in each direction and with views out to the sight and sound of the surf breaking on the reef.

We were able to get around the country quite well with our preferred method being to book a taxi for a day to go as we pleased. Taxis readily available at the hotel. Taxi drivers act as good guides and seem familiar with all the places the local travel company tours would go to - at about 1/2 to 1/3 price - and you have the benefit of agreeing your own itenerary. Tried local buses occasionally - quite an experience.

We last visited Mauritius in 1987, and hope we may return at a shorter interval next time. It is a scenically attractive island with some beautiful beaches.

The hotel was very nice and friendly but the food let it down badly. Stayed 2 nights which was enough and then upgraded to its sister hotel the Ambre.
