“Paradise Found!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We have just returned from our fourth visit to Lux* Grand Gaube (formerly Legends) on Mauritius and it was the best yet! The changes they have made since last year are quite subtle - but effective. Also the scheduled refurbishment of the rooms and suites continues to make progress.

The restaurants are basically the same but the menus have been revised and offer a wide choice with good quality and efficient, friendly service. The large wine list now includes a range of "Scrucap" wines which the LUX* group has developed by working closely with a number of wine producers in South Africa - as the name implies they have a simple screw cap, which is good for room service in particular.

The Kitchen (previously Genko) serves a full buffet breakfast and a wide variety of good quality themed international and regional evening buffets - but unfortunately, in my view, they have dispensed with the table service Gala Night that they used to put on once a week. That said, there are a lot of dining options.

Abalone is the restaurant on the beach where a nice new touch is a beach barbecue, where Chef Francesca will keep you smiling with her infectious friendliness! Abalone provides lunch and dinner with table service and a good choice of dishes, although it specialises in seafood. Diren even surprised us by arranging a table on the beach for us one evening!

The Beach (previously La Bastide) also serves lunch and dinner but with a Mediterranean emphasis, including authentic pasta and pizza, and has lovely sea views. Karma House, continues to provide a "fine dining" experience in the evenings and is now also the venue for the Chef's Signature Menu which comes as part of each 7 day All Inclusive package. At lunchtime Banyan The Island Kitchen, has a wide choice of food in a more informal atmosphere under the Banyan trees and specialises in Mauritian cuisine.

The Bar (formerly Grand Bleu) is one of our favourite lunchtime venues with fabulous views over the half-moon beach and serves food all afternoon, as well as providing a wide range of drinks and beverages.

Other new innovations are Cafe LUX* in the main lobby serving a wide range of locally roasted coffee, the beach "bicycle-cart" taking ice-cream and sorbet to beach sunbathers, plus, next to the beach, there is a fresh coconut and pineapple point. In addition there is a mystery bar which can appear anywhere in the grounds and where you help yourself on an honesty-box basis! They have also planted their own herb garden which, as well as providing the herbs for all of their restaurants, is also a place where you can relax. Locally sourced and bottled still and sparkling water are also nice new touches, as is an old fashioned "red" telephone box where you can make a short, complimentary call home!

This is a premium resort and the prices are not cheap so, if you can run to it, I would highly recommend the Pure Discovery (All Inclusive) package which means you don't have to keep a running record of your bill! It includes a wide choice of sea and land based activities for the more energetic - or inquisitive (including a couple of day trips, spa treatments and Chef tutorials), dining options at most of the restaurants, plus branded wines, beers and spirits, as well as cocktails and soft drinks at all of the bars/restaurants.

Another good move is that management seem to be deliberately playing down the corporate parties (there were none while we were there) and concentrating on people like us. We think this resort has a real can-do attitude, the atmosphere is very friendly, the entertainment is good but not intrusive, the food we found excellent and overall, although it is not cheap, it does offer excellent value for money.

“Fantastic hotel, fantastic location”

Visited here with my partner in June 2011 and loved every minute of it! The staff were very friendly and looked after our every need. Location wise this was great. A lovely quiet bay with easy access to water sports and the dive boat. Dive staff were excellent and offered a great service with some fantastic dives. On the food and drink front, again I was more than happy with the choices available and the bar staff never let my glass go empty :) Definitely a resort I will consider visiting again in the near future. 5 star!

“Great Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We visited this hotel in November of last year (when it was called Legends) We stayed 5
nights on the all inclusive deal (highly recommended as drinks are expensive) there are a
few different restaurants to choose from and each one really good.We found after pre-
booking in the morning that your chosen restaurant was available each night. We especially
enjoyed La Bastide on two evenings and The Banyan Pool Bar & Grill at lunch time.
The staff were all so friendly and helpful too. Our room was very comfortable, with great views
on to the main beach. We were on a 3 centre holiday and this hotel was the only one that
seemed to be on top of the birds problem at breakfast time ! All the food was covered and
the staff kept checking that it was kept that way. Would we go back there? Definately!!

Room Tip: Ask for a 1st floor room as the ground floor with patio area wasn't so private.

“A hotel in Paradise”

This hotel is in a wonderful setting with an excellent private beach and beautiful grounds.

All the staff were very friendly and always helpful and smiling. The food and wines within the 'All Inclusive Plan' gave plenty of choice and diversity of cuisine in all of the 5 restaurants.

The rooms were both elegant and luxurious. We stayed in an Ocean Superior Room on the first floor with a stunning view of the lagoon and beach. The cleanliness couldn't be faulted, ample towels for the bathroon and beach changed twice daily.

This was the best holiday that we have ever had and look forward to returning next year but for a longer stay.

It was a wonderfully relaxed, extremely enjoyable, 9 days

“Bliss on the Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

We came with some trepidation, having been informed of recent trouble at this property, and realizing after we arrived at the airport that we'd inadvertently selected a place at the opposite end of Mauritius--a 1.5 hour trip by car, which is not a pleasant thing to discover after a long airplane trip. And then, despite a gracious welcome (with fresh fruit juice and cold washcloths for refreshment), there was the sticker shock associated with the restaurant prices and the realization that we were in one of those full-service resorts in the Club Med style (though far more elegant than Club Med) where one is supposed to stay within the resort grounds, in splendid isolation from the local culture.

This is not at all the kind of holiday we usually take, or the kind of place we usually stay, preferring to explore the local culture and environment. This is all by way of saying that we were skeptical of the place. But after six days, we were fully won over and very sad to leave.
The whole staff, from the general manager Brice to the other executive staff (Sandeep, in particular) to the front desk personnel and the housekeepers, were friendly, helpful and seemed totally genuine in their efforts to make us comfortable and happy. They could not have been kinder or more thoughtful.

Of the many great things about the time we spent there, here's what sticks in my mind:

* the fabulously comfortable beds and lovely big bathtubs

* fantastic toiletries--I've stayed in some of the finest hotels in the world (the Danieli and Gritti Palace in Venice, the Four Seasons in New York and Seattle, etc.) and cannot think of another place where the toiletries would be worth mentioning; these aren't designer shampoos, but items that reflect the products and perfumes of the island; they are divine

* consistently terrific food, from the Asian noodle dishes to the pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven, all of it was top-notch, and that is not easy to pull off in a remote island location where most of the products have to be imported; the breakfast buffet is theatrical in its extravagance, and even the free in-room coffee service (ground coffee provided with a French press machine) is memorably delicious

* thoughtful touches, like high-quality slippers and burlap bags provided in the bathrooms to tote your stuff to the beach and back

* events, like the welcome cocktail-and-hors-d'oeuvre party for incoming guests, movies in the evenings (in the daytime too when it rains), and the astronomer who will show you the planets and constellations visible from the beach at Grand Gaube

* availability of almost any sporting activity you could want, from sailboats, kayaks and pedalboats right on the beach, at the disposal of guests free of charge, to tennis, waterskiing, kite surfing, ping-pong, and a decent gym; the only exception to the quality of these offerings was the dive shop, which is not run by the hotel, but by a local contractor--the dive operation was poorly managed, wildly overpriced (about double the maximum I've paid per dive anywhere else in the world) with negligent dive masters who repeatedly lost track of divers; I have been diving for over a decade and have never before been scared...until diving with the staff from the dive center associated with this hotel; our divemaster repeatedly "abandoned" us-swam off to a distance of 30m away so that we couldn't see him and he couldn't see us in the choppy, low-visibility conditions; that's an accident waiting to happen. As for actually leading the dive, I got much more value from the observations of my diving partner; the divemaster couldn't be troubled to do anything but hang out at a distance, upright and arms crossed, waiting for us to run out of air.

* food prices: unlike the dives, the meals were actually of very high quality, but the breakfast buffet will run you about 40 Euros per person, and I certainly can't eat enough to justify that kind of expense every day; pro tip; hit one of the many grocery stores you'll pass on the drive up from the airport--you'll have a fridge in your room, maybe a microwave, and you can get pretty far with those
