“Charming B&B on a busy street”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

This was our 1st trip to the area and knowing more now, I wouldn't have selected Waterloo as the town to stay in. The surrounding areas are so charming and Waterloo seems to have seen better days. That said, this is a great launching spot for local activities, nothing is very far away. Main Street sounds so much better than saying the Inn is located on Highway 20, but the road noise is annoying. To be truthful, there was a Harley Motorcycle Rally in Geneva the same weekend, but even the car traffic was a bit much when sitting on the charming porch.

The Inn itself is well done and enchanting in every way. We stayed in the Academy with twin beds at the back and had a separate bathroom. Our friends stayed in the Statesmen with the awkward shower in the room, but we understand that it's the best you can do with such an old house. The rooms were well appointed and the snack basket, coffee maker, and full-sized refrigerator for our use were a nice touch. Breakfast was delicious though it would have been nice to have had a choice.

We were sad to hear that the Inn is for sale due to illness. A spirit seems missing in the house.

“Very nice,”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

We took the smallest room it was only for two nights at the beginning of our stay in the finger lakes and we were meeting friends near by so it was really great. I would get a bigger room next time. Breakfast was good and we enjoyed it. There was a common room for Tv, and since we were the only ones in the bed and breakfast it was like we had the place to ourself. We really didn't spend alot of time in the bed and breakfast since we were out all day with friends.

“A charming Victorian B&B”

(Graduation weekend for HWS); a 15 minute drive east from the campus, this inn is located on the main road in the heart of the quaint and historical village of Waterloo. I booked 3 rooms a year in advance for this year's commencement and the rates at the time of the booking were honored. The Garden Room is large, spacious and beautiful and is located at the front of the inn. It has a traditional BR and a separte vanity area - lots of room for toiletries and a closet held a microwave, small fridge, complimentary snacks, and coffee maker. Harmony (very pretty and large) has a tub/shower combination exposed in the room itself with a water closet that has a door to it for privacy. Last year my husband and I had stayed in the Statesman and that too has a tub exposed in the room with a privacy screen and separate water closet w/ door. My husband didn't like the noise from the hallway fridge which is in the hallway opposite the Statesman's wall. It didn't bother me so it depends on the type of sleeper you are. The Academy room is quaint and small but has a traditional BR which I prefer (like the Garden Room). The Academy room is at the back of the Inn (all rooms being on the 2nd floor) and has two comfortable twin beds and two windows and bookcase and desk. Peeking in at the Lincoln room, I found it to have the tub/shower also exposed in the room with a separate water closet. Another guest who stayed in the Lincoln remarked that it is a small room and really comfortable for just one person. All the rooms and common rooms are beautifully decorated, clean, and the breakfasts are just wonderful. The sit down breakfast includes a bread (i.e. banana), a fresh fruit cup, and a hearty meal like eggs benedict or pancakes and their own sausage. The breakfasts are something to rave about. Also, each room has a t.v., we parked on the street without any problem. As this is a renovated home built in the 1800's it still has the original windows, some have screens to be opened, some do not. We had everything we needed in a beautiful setting and also enjoyed visiting with other guests at the breakfast table (1 large table which seats 6, 2 small tables seat 2 guests at each). We carried our own luggage in and out to our vehicles including up the tall staircase which may be an issue for some guests as when we arrived we checked ourselves in at 4 p.m. The rooms on the main floor include a parlor, a music room, DR, and BR all beautifully decorated.

“A Truly Unique Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2011

My girlfriend and I stayed at The Gridley for a weekend and were immensely pleased at our soggiorn in this old style Victorian mansion. Our hostess, Caren, was magnificent and besides the exquisitely prepared breakfasts, we also made special reservations for the English Afternoon Tea that was an unique experience and is served in the parlor area of The Gridley. I have been at many Bed & Breakfasts, but this was something really unique to The Gridley. My girlfriend, who is of English extraction, thoroughly loved the experience and shot numerous photo's of the parlor. Caren also sells loose leaf tea for those interested in purchase. Of the bed & breakfasts that I have stayed at, I would give this one a FIVE star rating, especially if you are looking for something that cannot be easily duplicated in other places. It is located on the main street in downtown Waterloo (birthplace of Memorial Day), but there is off street parking behind the mansion. A really fantastic experience if you are looking for romance, history, and old style English elegance.

“Quiet and peacful small B & B with understated quality.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

Perhaps a hidden gem.
So glad I found it.
Away from the hustle and bustle of tourist activities but close enough for easy access.
Sitting on the large front porch watching the traffic and activities go by reminded me of a time from the past doing the same thing on my grandmothers' front porches.
All rooms are on the second floor up a long staircase which could pose a problem for some quests but the hostess was helpful in getting luggage up to your room.
