Just returned from a week here with Thomas Cook landing back on 10th, on an all inclusive deal which, if you like all inclusive, was good value for money. We ended up with a ground floor suite located right out of the reception, no view which we were disappointed about but it was far enough away for it to be peaceful with no noise from the animation team or other guests. And as it was a suite rather than a room we had a huge bedroom and separate living area with a little kitchenette although it was devoid of ANY kitchen items other than a microwave and small fridge which we thought was really strange! However it also meant we had a big bathroom with a bath not just a shower as some rooms have.
The pros:
• Location set on the most spectacular beach we have ever seen, it literally went on for miles with fine white sand and no seaweed or litter, just gorgeous.
• Staff were hardworking and attentive.
• Food was of a high standard with something for everyone, lunch breakfast and dinner; the selection was huge, plentiful, fresh and tasty.
• Peaceful, I haven’t slept so well in ages...all you can hear is the sea and crickets to lull you to sleep.
• No queues at the bars, as experienced in other AI resorts.
• Room was spotless as was the bedding, bath towels and beach towels which all smelled of fresh laundry and were changed daily if required.
The cons:
• The weather...hmmm...not great and have had much more consistent weather in The Canaries at the same time of the year, however when the sun did shine it was hot! Not helped by the duststorm that hung around for a couple of days and disrupted flights and on those days the sea was rough and the waves were just enormous, not sure if it was related.
• Red flag on beach everyday, this may be different in the summer months but disappointing if you like to swim.
• The Animation team were loud and just a bit ‘in your face’ also felt like they were there for the French guests only. A polite no did the trick for us and we did not spend any time round the pool because of this and the unnecessarily loud music. Which if we had wanted to we would have struggled to get a sunbed....we did not see any empty beds all week.
• Drinks....well if you really enjoy a nice glass of wine with dinner and see this as part of your holiday enjoyment then forget it, the wine is just about drinkable as is the beer which is thin. Same if you enjoy a nice brandy after dinner, the local stuff was seriously like Nitromors, perhaps our expectations were too high however it would have been nice to have had the option to buy a nice bottle if you wanted.
TIPS:
• Take 4 AA* batteries for the safe, another reviewer recommended it and so we did and it saved us 2 euros a day!!
• Take enough toiletries, shower gel etc as there is NO where to stock up, the little hotel shop had limited supplies and was massively expensive.
• You get a complimentary bottle of water which you can refill in the restaurant, we also took a travel kettle and coffee and tea and we were really glad of it, we managed to get fresh milk in the restaurant and also borrowed a couple of cups from there.
• Use the beach to the left of the beach bar, its way more sheltered!
• Do take advantage of the fresh crepes that were cooked at the beach bar between 4&6 each afternoon....they were delicious! Just be careful you don’t get behind a French guest who thought it was ok to stand and wait while they cooked the 16 that she asked for!! No joke!
All in we had a chilled week, we did feel a little trapped in the hotel even though we did do one trip into Sal Rei, there is little outside of the hotel so if you are looking for a week of not having to do much except to walk to the restaurant for food or drinks or a walk on the beach then you will enjoy it. However if you are looking for a little culture and to be able to sample some local cuisine, beer or wine in or outside of the hotel then you will be disappointed.
And finally don’t do as I did on arrival and have a knee jerk reaction at Andy the Thomas Cook rep and demand to be moved to the 5* Iberostar next door, purely based on lack of a sea view, no drawers in the bedroom and lack of the little touches that are generally expected in a hotel that is 4* by international standards because this one is not. A good night’s sleep, the quality of food and an amazing beach location were a fair enough trade off for me!!
Room Tip: upper floor for a sea view and one away from the main pool area.
