As the photos show, Lake Mohonk is a spectacular setting for a hotel - a small but dramatic mountain lake surrounded by forests, formidable granite cliffs and glacial boulders. The hotel itself is a rambling, multi-story, Hogwarts-looking hotel with towers, turrets, decks, zigzagging hallways, and interesting spaces to explore. The boathouse has more than enough canoes, rowboats and paddleboats to meet demand, there are huge trout just off the dock, and the lake water's amazingly clear for swimming (although perhaps a little disconcerting for some, since it drops off to 40-50 feet deep almost immediately). Rooms, especially on the lakeside, are pleasant but furnishings are pretty ordinary, and some of the jutting sections of the building can obstruct views to the left or right. They offer a few interesting activities each day, such as art workshops, guided hikes, outdoor movies ("Casablanca" from the front porch), and live performances, but the main attraction (between meals) is just enjoying the surroundings. I was surprised to see multiple TripAdvisor reviewers railing about "mediocre" food. We thought the buffet at all three meals was quite good (we skipped the "formal" dinner). At dessert, our kids couldn't get enough of the 4-tier chocolate fountain for dipping strawberries and other treats. The outdoor picnic barbecue at the Granary was the quintessence of a summer cookout - ribs, burgers, chicken, corn on the cob, mounds of fresh berries, ice cream. It's true that the entrees wouldn't stack up to those at a fine city restaurant, but that's hardly the playing field here. The only complaint is that it's extremely expensive. For our family of 4 sharing a lakeside Victorian room (queen, twin, rollaway, 6th floor), the built in "gratuity"/service charge plus taxes drove a $700 nightly rate (AARP) up to $900 per night, and it would have been over $1000 at rack rates. That puts it in a price league with Fairmont mountain resorts like the Chateau Lake Louise or the Banff Springs Inn, and this is definitely not a facility at that level of luxury despite the many wonderful things it has to offer. Their new Spa is also premium-priced. We enjoyed the experience of our two-night stay tremendously, but at those rates we'll be looking somewhere else for the next splurge.
