I was very skeptical about staying here b/c of the reviews, but the other hotels that we had stayed in the past were either knocked down and replaced by condos, or jacked up their prices majorly this year.....and let's face it, most of these Wildwood hotels are pretty much the same, so to pay $200 or more for a dumpy efficiency is kind of crazy. We paid $149 a night, which was the cheapest rate for anything within a block of the beach. We asked for 2 double beds, we got them, and everything we asked for. We had even switched our stay 3x b/c of the weater - and found the staff to be nice and accommodating. Perhaps b/c we've stayed in Wildwood, we know what we want and ask for it ahead of time and usually get it!
This is your typical Wildwood hotel....you can't go in expecting the Ritz-Carlton. We had typical beachy furniture, a small efficiency kitchen, a few dishes, cups and plates. A nicer coffee maker than we've had in any other hotel, and the kitchen and bathroom were cleaner than other hotels where I've stayed. Did I notice a few dust bunnies under the bed and dresser? yes... but no more than a typical home has. The bathroom is a little small, but very clean and one of the best showers I've had in a Wildwood hotel water pressure and tempurature wise. The living room TV had cable and a nice variety of channels, unfortunately the bedroom only has basic TV chanels. We made the best of it and hooked up a portable DVD and watched movies for our "pre-bed" TV. (I always watch TV while I'm falling asleep and so does my friend). The beds were pretty comfortable and there were lots of pillows. FYI the air-conditioner is in the bedroom, so if you don't like an ice box at night make sure you turn it down. I like it cold, so wasn't an issue for me. There is a ceiling fan in the living room which really does help keep it cool despite the A/C being in the other room.
The property was kept very clean, as well as the pool, and I think is so warm b/c it's heated and is in the sun ALL DAY. There is a very old mini-golf setup and pool table outside which you can get stuff for in the office. And the 2 grills by the pool looked decent and seemed like they were being utilized a lot. The location of this hotel is across the street from a beach entrance, so very convenient, and there is a coffee shop right across the street. I'd say the walk to the boardwalk is about 1/2 a mile, so it's not around the corner, but is not a bad walk either - my friend and I walked the bike path home and it was actually a nice relaxing walk at night and we saved on parking.
A few issues to keep in mind:
- if you are under 25 and NOT MARRIED (travelling with a friend or boyfriend) a lot of Wildwood Crest hotels will turn you away. They are very strict about being family oriented. Most ask when you are booking, but just know this going in so you don't get screwed like one of the previous reviews. My friend and I don't have a problem now that we are 40, but I think they are trying to keep the young party element away.
- When you check in, they will give you 2 remotes, you have to return those when you check out.
- We were charged a $20 "key deposit"....most other hotels give it back, this one didn't, but we didn't ask for it either
- Tax on hotels in NJ is 14%, so make sure when you ask for the price of your total stay you ask for it with tax so that you are not in for a surprise when you go to pay.
- You pay in full for your stay when you check in, and this hotel doesn't offer refunds. If you are not OK with that, find another hotel. It's clearly posted in the lobby, so it's one of their policies and they have the right to enforce it. A lot of these WW hotels have policies they've had to put in place to avoid getting screwed....most of these hotels are family-owned, and if you take the time to talk to the owners, most are very nice and have "war stories" about past guests who have caused them to have to put these policies in effect.
- if you go out late at night in-season, the parking lot will most likely be full when you get back. There is someone in the office though, and they will find you a place to park, we found them very nice and accomodating.
- The wi-fi worked from my laptop in the living room but not the bedroom (I have a Wireless-N card), but my Verizon cell-phone didn't even get great reception from the bedroom, so I have a feeling it might be something in the walls. But I did get a solid connection from the living room. Get the wireless key from the office when you check in so you don't have to make an extra trip.
All in all I was pleasantly surprised by the Cape Cod... and will be returning next year. It was the perfect hotel for our budget, where we wanted to go (the beach and boardwalk), and what we needed (a comfortable room).
