Here at the Science Center, we house and exhibit many different wild animals, including river otters, mountain lions, bobcats, deer, bears, birds, foxes, and skunks. The wild animals at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center are ambassadors of their species, here for the purpose of educating our visitors about New Hampshire's natural world. Most are orphaned, injured, or otherwise unable to survive in the wild. Observing these animals up-close, together with experiencing our hands-on exhibits, offers visitors the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of our native wildlife and appreciation of the natural world. « less

“Had a great time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

I had a few hours to kill on a business trip so i decided to go visit. Very glad that I did. It's very reasonably priced and very informative. The animals are kept in as natural a state as possible and you get to see them quite closely. There are informative lectures on a frequent schedule and I attended a couple of them. It was good to see how much scientific and educational information was given, yet in a fun and easy to digest way.
The trails are easy to navigate, the points of interest well signposted, and there are a lot of hands-on learning activities in the children's area [which this adult happily took part in]
I particularly liked the Bee colony exhibit which was set up in such a way that you could peek into the life of the hive through transparent enclosures.
I wished that I had more time, because I could have spent at least 3 more hours there!

“Guaranteed Fun - Your Visit is Always Different!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

It doesn't matter when you go, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is always a treat.

Whether you're there to see the animals, walk the trails, or learn something new, you'll never run out of things to do or adventures to have.

We have visited many times over the years, and each time we go, we wonder why we waited so long to return.

Our favorite aspect of the science center is seeing the animals. There are always different things to see, but we tend to race to visit the bobcats. Depending on what time you're there (even morning or afternoon), they'll have different animals out, based on the animal's habits.

Docents are always there to chat and teach, and I find myself learning something new whenever I see one.

The Kirkwood Gardens are also gorgeous.

The Science Center's programs are also very rewarding. We have been to several, including the "big cat" or "Mountain Lion" day, and we've enjoyed all of them.

The thing that's best about the Science Center is that it's constantly evolving. They're always cleaning it up, always making it better. And they try to involve the public as much as possible. It's nice when you see a piece of yourself included there.

Can't wait to go back!

“Very informative and fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

If you like nature you will love it here. This is very educational and set up for young children but us coming from Ireland, we learnt a lot and had a great morning. It is a pleasant walk through the woods.

The staff are FANTASTIC and so patient while giving talks on the animals.

We didn't try out the food so we can't comment on that.

“You will not be disappointed, but read the full description”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011

They have taken a forested watershed and put enclosures on it to create a very natural looking zoo of North American animals. The animals have all been injured or come into contact with humans and therefore cannot be rehabilitated into the wild. It was nice to see these animals as typical zoos often focus on elephants and tigers etc,. They have a lot of presentations where you can see the animals close-up and hear interesting facts about them. There is enough to keep young children interested here and it is not too big that you want to leave before you have seen it all. As an adult and a naturalist, I learnt quite a bit too. They have volunteers at every exhibit to give you extra information. One warning - the cafe is useless, especially for kids. If you are bringing children and you plan to stay during meal time, then bring your own packed lunch. This is one of the best animal centres that I have visited and all my family enjoyed themselves.
