“I always wanted to stay here and was not disappointed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

We had a wonderful stay at the Hanover Inn this past weekend (Labour Day). My husband loved his time at Dartmouth and wanted to show our children the campus.
The location for the Hanover Inn is perfect. We went with the valet parking (approx. $18)and walked everywhere. I didn't see a parking garage but I believe the street parking is limited to 2 hours.
The hotel itself is old but very well maintained. I heard someone say the hotel is going to be renovated and I hope the character of the hotel does not change. We stayed in a Jr Suite and our kids didn't mind the pull out couch at all. Aside from updating the carpet in our room (which was not bad) I would not change a thing. We loved the old room keys.
There was a wedding on Saturday night and it was very loud and kept our kids up very late. We didn't complain -- our kids can have a night of sleep comprised for someone's special day -- but if you are going to stay there you might want to ask in advance if there is a wedding that night. If so, request a room far from the noise because it was very loud. It's a perfect setting for a wedding though and it sounded like a great time.
Overall a beautiful hotel, great service and the absolute best location. We will be back.

We couldn't have asked for a nicer review, thank you. We hope your family had a great time during your Labor Day Weekend stay at The Hanover Inn at Dartmouth College and that your children enjoyed their guided tour of Dartmouth College provided by your husband. We apologize for any noise during the wedding and sincerely appreciate your understanding. The hotel is undergoing some exciting changes with renovations to the rooms and to the lobby, but not to worry; it is our goal to preserve the historic New England feel that our guests love. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future.

“Great location and staff, but needs renovating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

I had always wanted to stay here and since my son's wedding party was staying here, we also booked reservations. Hanover Inn is a historic Inn and you cannot beat the location - right on the Dartmouth Green and 2 blocks from Rollin's Chapel where my son was married.
The staff is fantastic! The front desk , the valet, and housekeeper went above and beyond. The Hanover Inn's staff and location are the best thing about this hotel.

Unfortunately the entire hotel is in need of serious renovation. While the beds are very comfortable, there are no feather pillows. The rugs are stained and the porcelin in the bathtubs is very chipped. However everything is very clean. While I did not expect a fridge or microwave, I was surprised not to find a coffee maker or mini bar. The ice machine is on the 1st floor.
The biggest dissapointment was the air conditioner. I had called a few days before our arrival to make sure that the air would be on during Labor Day weekend. (If not then I was going to stay at another hotel) I was assured that it would not be turned off and it would not be a problem. Well guess what? It was turned off our first night there. The room temp was in the 80s since it had been very warm that day. I was given a fan and advised to open the window. Since our room overlooked the outside dining patio and street,it was very noisy. We slept very little that night as the room never did cool off. It was very aggravating especially since I had called ahead to make sure this would not happen. I heard others complaining as well in the lobby . Thankfully the air was turned back on the next day. I would be very leery of staying there again during spring and fall.
There are no safes in the room and you are given room keys with a note saying there is a 400 dollar charge if lost. I had a mild panic attack when I thought I had lost one of the keys- plus the fact that if I had lost it someone could get into my room. As much as I like actual keys, if the room number is on them it becomes a real safety issue.
Once the renovation is done it will be a very charming hotel.

Your very kind acknowledgment of our staff is greatly appreciated. We are delighted to have contributed to your family's special day. “Location, location, location . . .”

We stayed at Hanover inn for 2 nights in August while in town on business. The inn is in a prime location for visits to Dartmouth College and the town of Hanover. Our room (which we requested after looking at Trip Advisor) was on the first floor at the end of the hall, away from the elevator, and overlooked the Dartmouth Green. We had a ovely view and our room was quiet. Though the inn has a tired feeling (and smells like my grandmother's house), there are renovations planned which should be a big help. We would stay here again and recommend the inn to other travelers.

That being said, the inn seems overpriced while it remains unrenovated. The bathrooms and furnishings are tired. The roll-up shades are vintage. There are also hiccups in service e.g. we had turndown service and chocolates on one night, but none on the second night. There were empty or almost empty containers of bath gel, shampoo and conditioner in the shower which were not refilled. When we checked out, the woman at reception was seriously cool and failed to ask us how our stay was, did not invite us to come again, or even to have a safe trip home. Just ran our credit card and that was that. Maybe it's because we're from the south, but that felt very unhospitable! Is it because they know they're the only game in town and feel no need to be friendly?

Bottom line, we'd stay here again because of the location and the general feel of the inn.
Once the renovations are completed, the price of the rooms may be more justifiable ~ unless they go up!

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Dartmouth Green.

Thank you for sharing your comments about your stay at the Hanover Inn at Dartmouth College. It is disheartening to hear that during your visit you experienced some 'hiccups' in the service you received. Our goal is to provide our guests with the warm and friendly experience you would expect from a historic New England inn; to hear that it was anything less is taken very seriously. Your comments will be shared with the Inn's management team and housekeeping will be notified to ensure bath amenities are refurbished more quickly. We are currently undergoing renovations as you pointed out in your review that will fully renovate each guestroom. We will also be adding a new restaurant overlooking the Dartmouth Green and we hope that you visit us again to enjoy all these exciting changes. Thank you for sharing all your feedback and it would be our pleasure to welcome you back in the future!

“Great experience--would go back.”

Not cheap--but if you are visiting downtown Hanover or Dartmouth College, you cannot do better as far as location. The hotel overlooks the green; there is a front porch with rocking chairs to watch the world go by. We were there in August and the streets were full of night life. And very nice restaurants are steps away from the hotel. Besides the basic amenities, the hotel supplied excellent chocolates every day. The valet parking is pricey--check when street parking is free, or consider the cheaper garage about a block behind the hotel. Also--breakfast was not included, but the hotel served coffee, tea and hot chocolate in the lobby each morning. Very small exercise room in basement--didn't use it.

“Nice, venerable inn with small limitations.”

I stayed at the Hanover Inn on a business trip before the fall semester had started at Dartmouth, whose campus it adjoins. This is clearly a well-run hotel, clean, dignified, nicely appointed, and well staffed. Positives include an attentive bell staff that holds the door for customers and arranges for valet parking; free Internet service; and an excellent location. My room was spacious and nicely decorated, with a large, clean bathroom, very comfortable king bed, flat-screen TV, and antique-looking (but NOT old and tired) furniture. Although this is an old building, the nights were very quiet--no creaking floors and not much ambient noise. Nice touches include two amazing chocolates on the bed at turn-down; a nice assortment of bathroom amenities (mouthwash, a small tube of toothpaste, high-end soap, etc.); and a coupon for free lemonade and cookies between 5-7 p.m. (but why not a glass of wine???). Negatives: the somewhat officious desk staff; no coffee/tea service in the room (but plenty free in the lobby); and--no fault of the hotel--a somewhat snooty clientele (nouveau riche and landed gentry who can pay for their kids to go to Dartmouth and expect the world to wait on them hand and foot, and are enraged by the slightest inadequacies). Finally (although I wasn't paying), the $260+ price tag is a bit much (see comment above about clientele), and be forewarned that the valet-only parking is $18 per day with the only other option being a $16 per day at a pay lot nearby, and no overnight parking on the street. Tack that onto the nightly bill. Still, if this is the night you say goodbye to your precious darling eager to embark on debauched college life, it's a nice, dignified place to stay.

We enjoyed the descriptive narrative of your stay and appreciate the details that you have kindly included about the hotel’s historic character. We regret if the front staff seemed anything but warm and welcoming and will follow up with them to review your comments. For future stays, consider one of our featured packages that are detailed on our website. The 'Summer Special' for example offers hotel credit towards onsite dining, room service, or parking which may suit your needs based on your comments. Thank you for your all your feedback and we hope to welcome you back to the Hanover Inn at Dartmouth College.
